Anyone ever tried this? Is it even possible?

I was thinking about filling a 5gal bucket slam full o chum, punchin holes all in it, and yakin it out past the 3rd bar. From there I plan on weighting it down with something and marking it with a float buoy then drop my baits close by.

Think this will work?[/b]

What I thought about doing was chopping up a bunch of fish and freezing it in a bucket and then putting the wholes like you said. I even want as far as building a unit out of 4" PVC that I planned on putting the frozen chunks in but I never deployed it. Still sitting in my garage.

if chummed I never took the bucket all the way out just at the shoreline and yes we caught sharks that day. Who knows you may just be helping the people down current but sharks normally follow a chum trail until they reach the end of it.. So I think it would be a good idea to chum right around your bait drop..

The only problem I see with it, is what happens when that shark wraps up your line in the chum bucket. I've wanted to do the same thing, I just don't know how to get around that.

A couple of years ago there was a girl attacked by a shark while wading off a FL Panhandle beach. The story went that someone had been chumming in the area. True or not, would you want to assume the liability?

Good point Trash Heap. We tried that very thing in Galveston when I was a kid. We saw a huge Bull shark show up around the chum bucket at the same time a family pulled up next to us and (with the kids) waded out to the second bar. We pulled in the chum bucket and left after we told them what was going on. We never did it again. I am also curious as to the laws on chumming at PINS. Any one have info on that?

A few years back me and a friend caught our limit of Reds and Drum and we cleaned them at the 50MM before going home.

Tossed all the carcusses (sp?) in the wade gut as we were cleaning and before we left we counted 8 Blacktip sharks in the area. So I would say it would work...Adios

I dont see the "endangerment of others" to be much of an issue at the 55mile marker. If some family pulls up next to us, I will just tell them what the deal is and pull in my bucket.

But I am not sure what to do about getting tangled in my buoy line. That could be an issue.

I dont like to shark fish around swimmers one bit. If I feel that there will be children in the area I just wont stop. The other day I was 20 miles down and some a hole decided to pull up and park not 30 feet from me and unload his whole family. I told him sir we are sharkfishing here I dont want your kids in danger. He said its ok we are fishing too and into the water they went.. Needless to say I drug my big ole wiegh in and found another spot.. some people!

Never fails...we will pick a spot 20 or so miles down with nobody in sight either direction so my wife and her friends can sunbath 'Skipper' style and be able to see vehicles coming and someone will pull up with a truckload of kids and set up camp 100 yards away. What is the deal with that? 60+ miles of beach and they want to stop that close? It isn't like they are potlicking because I can't catch a dang thing.

The chum idea would work, I would think, if you could figure out a way to ensure the lines wouldn't tangle.

It totally works. Not exactly the same as the beach, but filled a 20oz bottle with MH oil, punched a hole in it and tossed it in the rocks down at the mansfeild jetties (on a string). With an outgoing tide the slick was a 100ft wide and dumping off the north jetty in about 10min. At about that same time mullet started showing up from everywhere. There were thousands of them skimming the oil off the top. Long story short - those mullet turned into dinner for several different critters that afternoon.

What court would hold you liable for this?

the court without question should be the MORAL COURT. our society has gone downhill ever since we started to live by the lawyers interpetation of life, liberty & justice.
they have turned this world into: you're a sucker for life, liberty only for perverts who are rich and injustice for all.
