I caught one under the Oso bridge last year, but I remember it having a greenish hue to it. I think it was some sort of puffer fish. I do remember it had very strong bony-type teeth deeply recessed in its mouth. It also looked as if it had pretty massive leverage on its jawbone, so It probably ate coral.
DO NOT EAT PUFFERS. THESE WILL KILL YOU, DEAD, AND THERE IS NO KNOWN ANTIDOTE FOR THE POISON THEY HARBOR.

it is a smooth puffer,Lagocephalus laevigatus. I have caught many under Oso Bridge and at packery. They get large up to 18 inches and sometimes larger. The bigger ones don't puff up nearly as often, as it requires lots of energy and their skin is not as flexible when they are larger.
In fact, their skin is tougher like a thin leather, and their body feels firm and rigid. They have a parrot like mouth and can tear up a Gulp shrimp (and a finger) into bits in a matter of seconds. the shadow in the video makes it difficult to see the face, but I have VERY LITTLE doubt that it is a L. laevigatus.
PS, I am a graduate student in Ichthyology and have studied different species of Caribbean fish for about 8 years now. Any other questions, let me know |

I've seen a few "puffers" in the Bluff with very thick leathery skin and even tattoos and they don't appreciate it when you kick them |

I caught one at the COSWAY about 2 months ago. On a 3/0 circle hook it was hard to get off. The skin was leather like and the mouth looked like it was designed to eat coral. _________________ "Fishing is Living" |
