i just got a tracker boat and i noticed the oil line to the motor is cut and plugged, the owner mixed the oil and gas manually ,he says its better that way and alot of people do it . he mixes 50 to 1 ratio . is this in act true?

i'm no expert and will defer to current boatowners. having owned many boats in the past, many boaters i know including one marine mechanic swear that the automix works, doesn't work, doesn't work well and sometimes doesn't work at all. they mix their oil/gas to insure constant lubrication of the engine. no personal experience as last three boats were all inboard v-8's.

Lots of guys choose to mix the oil manually. Great way to ensure that you indeed are getting oil in your gas.

oil injection is very prone to failure. It just takes one time to kill your motor running it without oil. If any motor I own has vro its gone before I hit the water!

A friend of mine had a fairly new (03-04) jet ski that he replaced the motor in twice before ditching the injection system, while I had 2 mid 90's models that never had any problem with the injection system. That being said, other than those 2 ski's, I always premix my own just to be 100% sure.

my 1988 model 40HP Yamaha does just fine. Well anyway until I got my first kayak. The only place I have run it since then is the driveway!

The VRO pumps on older Evinrude/Johnson should have been called POS................................................... they suck! Evil or Very Mad I plugged mine [94] years ago and never looked back. The original went out on me on vacation: one year and 3 days after I bought the rig!! It was actually pumping TOO MUCH oil. The engine would run at full rpm IF you could get it started, but wouldn't idle because of plug fouling, and put out a smokescreen like James Bond! Shocked

The newer Etecs seem to have fixed the problem but who knows. I have been running one at our lake [115] for 13.5 months now and never have had a problem with it: only the fuel supply. For some reason the bulb refuses to pump up hard and/or stay that way. When the motor is getting gas it runs like a scalded dog, but every now and then it can't pull enough through the line for whatever reason, and it stumbles a little or is just hard to start.

I know nothing of the others.

with the salt water, and any water, oil floats and then the water some how messes everthing up.. then you have no oil..
we blew an engine in my buddies boat.. water got in the oil reserve and well you can guess what happend after that.
when they work, they work pretty good, but if they fail and they do.. expensive repair

I would check with the manufacturer to see what the mixture is... I had an older Evinrude that I disabled to VRO on. And it called for a 50:1 ratio.. But check to be sure.

Friend of mine mixes his own. Only reason is his pump went out. Cost to much to replace. But he uses the same TP twice, maybe more never watched. Rolling Eyes Mine works fine, I have talked to my dealer about it and he said (of course) if it ain't broke don't mess with it. Get my motor serviced once a year and they check it in the regular service. But like barnaclebill said check with dealer.

If you have an older model OMC engine, mixing you own AND using pure synthetic oil will save you plenty of headaches in the future, AND there much less smoke. The oil ain't cheap but it's cheap insurance. Heck, Evinrude will void your warranty on an Etec if you don't use XD 100 oil, and that stuff is $50 per gallon at retailers, but the motors use so little oil that the cost per mile is way low and there's absolutely no smoke!
