Hi Gang!
I am thinking about going tuna fishing again but last time I went on a head boat I caught way more than I could imagine (250 lbs after cleaning).
I gave away most to friends but it was still to much to keep fresh. I love tuna smoked, seared, raw, in a can......et el.
But if I go again and do well what do I do with all this meat to maximise my protien need?
In other words, is there any place in Port A or Corpus to have your tuna canned (or how do you do it yourself)? Or can I sell my tuna (probelly not without a commercial license). Or maybe I can trade some tuna for a hog hunt or deer hunt??????
Just putting out some questions for you all and please take no offense as I am one of the most conservative conservationalist there is out there but love fishing on a limited budget and the head boats do not catch and release. _________________ Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it. -- Mark Twain |

It's catch and release after limits are met.
Put me down for some yellowfin.
Will trade blackfin for it.
Or will make donation to your favorite charity. |

Ok, please excuse my ignorance on the topic, but the party boats I have always fished on back on the east coast didn't have this rule.
So you mean to tell me that if I catch a tuna on their boat, I do not have the option to release it? I am forced to keep my limit even if I had no intention on bringing home a single fish???
Is it me or is that a bit rediculous? Can somebody please elaborate. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

catch and release yellowfin??? no way man!! that stuff is like gold!! Im sure if you told the deckhands that you didnt want to keep anything they wouldnt bring the gaff but thats pretty much the point of the trips if your going to spend 500-1000 dollars on a long range trip you want to take home some fresh fish to your family. But if you catch a billfish , amberjack, red snapper , it will probably be let go. Even if you didnt want to keep any fish there are 20 other guys on that boat that do.
Also.. If you want to can or jar your own tuna get a pressure cooker.. Iv researched it before and I plan on buying one after my next long range and spice it up all different ways. My old lady loves the lemon dill yellowfin covered in balsomic vingager. Id make cases and cases and eat it right out of the can. A google search came up with some pretty good step by step with picture instructions.. |

Robul, I am with you for sure, yellowfin is the holy grail of sashimi (next to bluefin, which is listed as endangered in the Atlantic). And those trips do cost a butt load And amberjack is pretty decent eating too if they are small, they cook up great. But the point is that if you have no need for 250 lbs of meat, and you wanted to leave it out there, I can't imagine a captain/mate telling you no? Theres a difference between "bringing home fish for the friends and fam" and saying "head boats don't practice catch and release". If the latter is true, I would just like to know the reasoning? _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

and is the original post talking about yellowfin or blackfin? I know most of the headboats out of Port A clean up on blackfin, but for the Yellowfin trips, I was under the impression that most of those are smaller private charters, no? _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

that's easy, just save your money and don't go. that's the best way to "ensure" that the fish stay out there. _________________

good point PF. Got that everybody? Want to practice catch and release, dont bother, stay home.
Can anybody verify/explain the mandatory "no catch/release until limits are met" on head boats or am I wasting my time asking? _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

Yellowfin is great stuff, right under Bluefin and BigEye. Not nearly as rich/fatty as even Bigeye but badazz nonetheless.
Here's what I would do. Take the entire catch to my friend who owns a sushi restaurant and who has both a shock freezer (flash frozen in 10 minutes) and a deep freezer (40 below or somesuch). The flash freezing process prevents cell degradation (cell membranes rupture during a slow freeze due to ice crystal growth and upon thawing you have a soggy mess unfit for raw consumption) and the deep freeze allows extended (like a year) holding times.
Make a deal with him that he process all your fish, in return for a splitting the catch. Stop by once a week for a couple pounds of tuna until it's all gone. _________________ Jeff

The head boats are for killing fish. I worked close to 3 years for Dolphin Docks out of Port A. The quicker the boat limits the quicker the deckhands/captains get to go home = less fuel bill + quicker turn around time so they can run more trips + happy customers = More $$$$ for the owners.
Especially when snapper fishing if a legal snapper came on board it went on someones stringer (usually the ones puking their guts out or kids) so the boat would have its limit and we could go target another species (kings, snotty's, or B-liners) = more happy customers = more $$$$
Party boats arent setup to "release fish". We try and release billfish, but sometimes they die. We had a 350 blue that was tail wrapped came up dead, but it was cut up and divided up (it was delicious).
People fish head boats to get meat. You don't go window shopping at HEB, and you don't go on a party boat to release fish. We did our best to get them all the fish they legally could.
I do have a problem with the people that go and leave their fish at the dock, or let them sit in a freezer for a year and throw it out. But that's not our fault. Hope this cleared some things up for those interested... Jason Slocum |
