Y'all would have been proud of me. I didn't cut or punch anyone out (not that any number didn't need it) and I didn't even cuss anyone out. Even though 4 eggs, 2 pieces of breakfast sausage and 3 burned pieces of bacon cost $51. I never figured on winning the award. From the beginning I felt politics would play a big role in the outcome and we all know I am not notoriously politically correct. I WORE 3 DIFFERENT BUSINESS SUITS complete with ties the 2 days in D.C. and tried very hard to represent all of you in a manner that honored you and your efforts as I've always thought this was about you; not me. I am TOTALLY satisified that I did a good job of that. Thanks to the wonderful kindness individuals showed Joy and me by taking a collection up which allowed her to join me on the trip she was able to go somewhere she had never been, see things she would have never conned me into taking her to see and is nursing blisters on her feet from trying to see all of D.C. in one day. We took a private tour of the oval office and West wing of the White House. Got to see Theodore Roosevelt's Medal of Honor (didn't know he got one), the Brady Briefing Room and the following day went on an extensive tour of the Capital Building. I would much have preferred feeling the wind in my face while cast netting mullet but she had a ball and she puts up with a lot around here and it was a nice treat for her. Seems like we spent half the trip taking half our clothes off going through metal detectors. I kept getting the feeling that this is as close as I want to ever come to experiencing life in a prison. I was approached by 2 nationwide groups interested in supporting the cleanup and met the Secretary of the Interior briefly. No opportunity to really talk. He is from San Antonio and was one of the judges for the award. Really caught me off guard when he said, "oh, yes, you are down on South Padre." That's kinda' scarey isn't it; when he's the head of the National Park Service. THAT concerns me greatly. Although most Congressmen made them selves available for brief meetings with Heroes of Conservation from their districts; Congressman Solomon Ortiz was unable to do so. He sent his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mac King, also orginally from San Antonio and we talked at length about wind farms and touched on other local issues. I have succeeded in at least establishing a one on one line of communication with Mr. King by simply staying low key while still saying what I felt needed to be said. The Head of U.S. Fish and Game was also a speaker but not available for conservation. So here is the summation of the trip as far as I am concerned. The Big Shell Beach Cleanup got LOTS of attention and respect in D.C., new supporter may result from this, my wife had a ball and I'm pocketing a total of $6,000 as a result of all this at a time when I desperately need it to continue the work I do. And if that ain't all good then I don't know what is. Thank you to all the kindnesses Joy and I have been shown concerning this trip. Humbly, Your Brother in the Sand, Capt. Billy L. Just a poem for you..
Uncle Billy, you make me cry
the way you handle nature
and seem to stay so kind
you're a mean old man, but
were the same way young
I'm glad you are not smoking
But still full of dung, and....
If nobody feels the way that
I do ....about you
there is a free bird out there
that thanks you..

Cap'n Billy
Congrats on controlling your cussing, cuttin & punchin!
And thanks so very much for representing us Texans and our desire to conserve what we so dearly love. I am truly glad that Joy was able to join you and whatever $$ you received should be ten fold for all your past, current and continued efforts.
We have not met in a number of years, but had a close mutual friend. Don(or Donnie) Kloster that was killed in a bicycle accident three or so years ago. He spoke highly of you
Thanks for all you do!!
