I have never seen a fish like this before. I was wading along hwy 361 across from South Bay. Lots of water there. These 2 fish hit my gulp shrimp. They fight really well for their size. They have tiny very sharp teeth. The head reminds me of an arrowhead.

Inshore lizard fish Synodus foetens

No good to eat. Bad attitude. Neat looking fish. foetens refers to the "fetid" smell associated w/ them.

Nasty little buggers. I caught a few fishing with Jay. Come to think of it, I only catch them when fishing with Jay. Weird.

Jay's a one of kind guide. Especially on the Rabid Mullet. He can custom fit an angler to a species. Always puts me on trout and reds. Wonder why you got lizardfish? Very Happy

Lizard fish are one of the best "off-shore" baits I have ever used. They troll as good as mullet and don't "wash" out. They are good bottom fishing baits also.

Today was one of those days...
I get to Fish Pass Jetty and millions of mullet are swarming on the outgoing tide. Reds were caught, but fishing was slow. 2 nice flounder were caught.
A nasty storm was coming, so we headed toward the Aransas Pass area, to check it out.
My first 2 casts, resulted in those nasty looking lizard fish. I wanted to put my neighbor wayne on some croaker and whiting, because he is a rookie. The bait stand is closed and the pier is gated. Bummer. I was looking forward to letting wayne do some catching in the Aransas Shrimp Channel.

So we waded the area next to the bait place.

A few casts later I get a major hookup.
My spinning reel drag is screaming and I am close to getting spooled. My line took off between the powerline pole and the guide wire so i had to stumble across pilings and rocks from that old roadbed to reach the guide wire and free the braid line while trying to maintain a tight line. I finally freed the line and turned his head. He was making long fast runs that i could not stop. After a while I finally got him in.

It was a Sea Turtle!!!

those small ones you see all the time at the jetty. They are fast swimmers.

We unhooked it and it swam off quickly.

We then tried the lighthouse lakes areas. My boat is in the shop, so we were in my truck. Nada there.

We went back to the Fish Pass jetty and waves were crashing into the rocks, I was fishing the gulp shrimp along the eddy near shore on the falling tide, and a seagull flew full speed into my braid line.

Needless to say, i was fighting a flying bird in the air with my lure still in the water. A skip jack decides to hit my lure at the same time.

It took a while to untangle the bird, who was pissed off to say the least. He flew off and my lure was in the rocks by then.
The current was stronger today than yesterday. The croaker were gone. The waves were bigger.

Weird day of fishing, huh?

I catch reds and trout all the time that have lizard fish in them. So they like to eat them. I wouldn't want a stringer full. Ok i'll take you fishing again.

Let's do it IMS! Hopefully soon I can pick you up in the new skiff and we can break in the new Honder.

Next time I catch a lizard fish, I'm going to rehook 'em and throw em back out.

I suggest you ice down the fish, age it for three days, and then eat it Sashimi. I like mine raw. Very Happy
