I guess since the rule states " while actually fishing" i broke the rules. My bad. I guess i interpreted the rules different. And since my place of residence was the pier for those 3 days, and couldn't take my limit home and start all over.

So let me get this straight. If i was to camp on the beach for 3 or 4 days and fish everyday, and say i catch my limit of reds on the first day, I would still only be able to keep 3 total for the trip?

I'm just asking for clarification so it won't happen again. I don't make many trips down to the coast but when i do go down I don't intend on breaking any rules or regulations.

Thx

i guess the angler taking the picture didn't get in the pix too. looks all legal to me so what's all the big issue???? you all are thinking too much, assuming too much. GWs don't have time for that.

I posted this earlier but didn't get an answer. I didn't want trouble, so when someone mentioned ruffians, I thought I'd better ask.

I have never fished from Bob Hall Pier. What are the negatives?

Some one mentioned ruffians; what is that about? I just want to fish! I do not need trouble!!!!!!

I have thought of fishing the piers and levees but never have done it. Think I'll try it our next time I'm down.

Thanks!!

Ray

TPWD did away with the "overnight" loophole that used to allow for a limit of fish before midnight (your 3 on Friday) and additional fish after midnight (and your 1 on Saturday). That is the reason for the bold on the Possession of Fish page I quoted.

Unless you transported your initial limit back to your permanent residence (and no, your car does not count - see Page 32 for the definition of a permanent residence), then you were in possession of a number of fish that exceeded the daily limit while you were still on the pier. (while actually fishing). That is the important point here.

You certainly can have double the daily bag on your way back home, since like you pointed out, you were there for 3 days. BUT, you can't be in possession of more than the daily bag while on the pier (and from the original report, it sounds like you never left the pier) and you don't get to leave with a daily bag for each of your 3 days fishing. Possession limit is twice the daily bag.

You only had 4 fish, so, no harm no foul. But I would not want to be in your shoes if you tried to tell the Game Warden that you were there for 3 days........ Embarassed

Just keep the first limit separated from any subsequent fish you may catch. Writing the date the fish were caught on a piece of paper and putting them in a separate ice chest is all you need to do.

Don't put too much angst in my ruffian description. That is somewhat of an inside joke for me (as one of the resident spearfishermen here on the site), but it does describe some of the folks that tend to be less-than good stewards of the public resource, whether it be the pier or the jetties or the beach-front. Scan the topics here and you will no doubt find story after story of someone trashing the pier or the jetties, setting up a string of rods and blocking off way too much access, setting up camp in the roadway, etc., etc., etc......

The one common factor of the ruffians is that they tend to be a pain in the rear for everyone who wants to enjoy some time fishing.

Central Scrutinizer,

But what if I had reciepts from the pier for each of the days proving we had been there for 3 days? I guess it would be hard to prove when we actually caught the fish, but like I said I wasn't intentially trying to break the rules.

And to be honest we did have a 3rd fisherman. If you look at the first pic you can clearly see a 3rd chair. So we would have been okay if the game warden would have shown up. He didn't catch any of the fish so we didn't include him in the report. But to be honest i thought we were in the right, due to staying multiple days.

Thanks for the clarification!!

Like I said, no harm no foul.

Go back and re-read my last post that tries to differentiate between daily bag limits, possession limits, and the possession limits while fishing language. Better yet, get a copy of the Outdoor Annual and keep it with you when you make a trip.

I'm not trying to ride you about what looked to be an enjoyable trip, but if you live in Austin, and you fished for more than 1 day, then the maximum number of reds you can leave with is 6. And that holds if you made a trip down for a week.

Well I guess its a good thing I only brought back the 4 reds i caught. And my buddy kept the fish he caught.

Sorry if i got a little defensive at first, but I just wanted to try and defend myself. Even if we did have a 3rd person fishing with us, I was the one that caught the additional one on Saturday. So reguardless we would have still be within regulation since we had a 3rd fisherman, who subsequently didn't catch any fish. And each of the pictures show a 3rd chair and the corroboration of a random fisherman "omaka" who spoke with our group.

Like i said before. I guess I don't post many reports cause people are very quick to judge.

Thanks for the explanation. I just didn't want somebody beating on my head while I was trying to enjoy fishing!

This is a situation that I have often wondered about...but never had to worry about. Sad If one were to take their limit to the vehicle in the parking lot,,,or camp on the beach...and ice the fish down in a separate cooler, would one be legal to keep more fish on subsequent days? (up to possession limit) Or is this just a case of one being SOL for choosing a particular style of enjoying their pasttime?
