Blue. . . I always thought they were for offshore stuff? They generally use a gray base. I have never found gray to work for me, but everyone is different.
FWIW, I destroyed one of my 580 lenses in my Hammerhead shades. Sent them back. Costa 'repaired' the shades by sending me a new pair for $100. I suppose it's not a bad outcome since the shattered lens was my fault, though I've had some companies actually replace my purchase free of charge in similar circumstances (I didn't expect that in this case). |
they will cover pretty much everything but lens damage..
Just do yourself a favor Jeff.. And if you plan on buying any more costas.. Ask me first.. Live here In corpus long enouph well you will meet alot of people that can save you a few pennies here and there..
And yes blue mirror is or offshore with the gray base. I had a gray lens on a few pairs and while they are good for driving and bright light I cant see into the water so good with them. I like to sight cast so I prefer the vermillion as number 1 it really shows through the water and you can see the reds.. Green mirror is great too but I have had both the 580 and the 400 and I actually prefer the 400 mirrror because of the amber base instead of the copper.. |

I have been wearing the same set of Magellan polarized glass lenses that I bought at Academy for 5 years now. They were $59.99 then and are only $69.99 now. The set that I had before them were $170 Maui Jims and the Magellans fit better, have just as good features out in the sun, and I can still see out of them. If I lost them tomorrow I'd go back to Academy and buy another set. _________________ Dave

Thanks robul for the heads up.
I use my vermillion mostly as well.
I run with a handicap though; I'm partially colorblind as I failed those green/blue eyetests long ago. Those ones where you have to recognize a pattern in a bunch of green and blue dots. So, any help from good sunglasses is very welcome, and luckily I no longer wear dress socks to the office! _________________ Jeff

Ok, I think I am set on the costa del mar man o wars. I like the style and they fit great. The big question is where is a good place to buy these. Anyone know of a place that has a military discount that I can use? I appreciate all the input. Now just time to find a place to purchase them... _________________ Good things come to those who Bait! |

| im cheap and went with the magellans. Have had them for about 3 years now and dont have any complaints. They have a scratch resistant lens which seems to have helped ALOT! Im notorious on loosing my shades or breaking them so dont want to fork out a ton of money. Im really suprised how they only have a couple of small scratches considering how much ive thrown them around all these years. |

Yep manuel will take care of you guys.. Just mention my name or Capt Mikes I bet you get a nice chunk off retail. And Im known in real life as Robbie or Rob.. lol
ALSO.. He doesnt keep a ton on hand they do keep some though. Your best bet would be go online and pick the ones you like. Make sure you take note of the frame size for your face size. Manuel normally gets me a pair of costas 1 - 3 days after I order them. Iv bought about 5 pairs from him so far. |

I'd like to see Costa put a mirror finish on the vermillion lens. 580s are the best.....IMO. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

I hear what you guys are saying about what you are wearing or have worn in the past. I would really be interested in an objective side by side comparison between several brands. I would love to know if some brands are really better at penetrating the surface. There are many comparisons out there, but they're all done by the manufacturer who compares only his brand to his brand. A lot of times web articles tell you what to look for in a pair of polarized sunglasses. I already know that. I just don't know which is better.
Has anybody seen such an evaluation between brands? It would be awesome if somebody could evaluate sunglasses in different conditions and use fine granularity test patterns. That way you could actually measure the polarization effectiveness. _________________ HighTide

Costa Del Mars for years for me. Fathom frames ( fit me well), glass lenses (resist scratching but heavier), green mirror (chicks can't see my eyes checking them out {actually they block a bit more light with the reflection}), amber filter (contrast browns & greens which is the background of the flats).
I tell folks often...... There are many places one can scimp on fishing gear, but, for the flats, sunglasses are NOT one of them.
BTW -- as stated above blue is better for offshore cause the background is blue. Filter the most common/dominant color and the others stand out. |

My first set of High Dollar, prescription sunglasses were Ocean Waves and they were great. I lost them at Lake Fairfield, in January. I sure some 50# carp is the coolest carp in the lake, with his Ocean Waves. My wife has Ocean Waves and loves them. Ocean Waves was going through some HORRIBLE customer service issues and I bought Costas, because of that. The store I used to order the Costas, no longer sells Ocean Waves, because of the issues I mentioned, plus non support of some dealers. That's all I know about that!!!! _________________ Wanna be Bluffian!! Stay thirsty, my friends!!!! |
