Ok guys, what is your opiniun on the polarized glasses out there. I am looking at a few different types and not sure what I am going to get. Has anyone tried the fishgillz? Are the costa del mar's worth the price? What are the best ones for the price? I appreciate the help...

I am a Costa's guy and personally think they are worth the $. When I spend $100+ on a pair of glasses I tend to take care of them.

Whichever brand you go with go with the Vermillion or Amber lens. IMO the lighter lenses really brighten the structure (and fish Smile

) in the water.

I pay for costas too.. I love them.

As far as lenses I tend to agree

my top favs in order are
1.vermillion
2.green mirror 400 lens NOT 580 ( amber with green mirror coating)
3. amber
4 green mirror 580 ( green mirror with copper base)

I have some Costas. Vermillion and the green mirror 580s. Like the latter better but the 580s are heavier and slide down yer nose a bit more when it's a 110 degrees on the flatz.

I had used the cheapo sunglasses from WalMart for years. Then a friend gave me a pair of Costas in amber. I'll never wear anything else. In fact, I have been so impressed them, I convinced my wife to get a pair. She got the bifocals and loves them as well. I figure you only have one pair of eyes and everything I do, at least in the daylight, I use them. Better to spend a couple of dollars and invest in my eyes.

Better glass polarization = better visibillity
Sizing and what you will use them for should also be considered, if they don't fit right you won't like to wear them.
Academy has a good selection to try on as opposed to buying online w/o a trial fit. Then buy wherever you feel is the best deal.
I like Costa's after trying all the less expensive brands (under $65).

Maui Jim and Costa Del Mar probably have the best polarization for the money, but Maui has NEVER given us any trouble with warranty. Their Sport series is competetive with anything Costa has.

Oakley has made good improvements in their polarization over the last few years They were pretty bad), and you can change lenses if you scratch them on the interchangable models. Retail price is locked unless you buy them on base or through another program.

Rudy Project are good, but still pricey for the three lense pack.

REVO, Ray Ban, Serengetti and the others are okay, but the polarization quality will probably disappoint you for the price

Be careful with the cheap lenses, they need to be UVA and UVB or you can damage your eyes

I keep a cheap ($25) pair of UVA/B polarized for my dad on the boat. Somehow I keep having to buy another pair after he visits Very Happy

If you get the titanium Maui Jims, be careful if you turn sideways on plane (they fly off), Shocked

but they weigh nothing and a good floating croakie will save any pair from visiting the bottom of ULM.

long answer for your question, but your eyes are important and a "cheap pair" could result in some long term damage. Remember UV A/B and polarized.

If you fish the only way to go is COSTA DEL MAR! Bar-none! They are a little pricey but worth every penny. These are some serious sunglasses. Go try some on. Roys has some but I think the best selection is at Port A Outfitters.

amber lenses for regular light conditions, vermillion for cloudy and low light conditions, I get my lenses custom made with low profile bifocals for knot tying ....been thinking about getting a blue pair just for kicks so I can look like everyone else at the dock. I like my maui jim frames, but my other pair is costa. Very Happy

Strange though even the el cheapos from academy have stickers stating 99.9% UVA/UVB protection. That said, I don't know if I believe that the cheap chinese made knockoffs are worth a damn (anyone remember lead paint on kids toys)?

Blue. . . I always thought they were for offshore stuff? They generally use a gray base. I have never found gray to work for me, but everyone is different.

FWIW, I destroyed one of my 580 lenses in my Hammerhead shades. Sent them back. Costa 'repaired' the shades by sending me a new pair for $100. I suppose it's not a bad outcome since the shattered lens was my fault, though I've had some companies actually replace my purchase free of charge in similar circumstances (I didn't expect that in this case).
