Not to mention all the sport dude fisherman who took them only for the "saw" to hang in the resturants and living rooms. Anytime a species is depleted......man is behind it.

The tarpon would come from the south durning the spring months most time in May, we could watch them coming in the 2nd and 3rd gut. When they got to Bob Hall pier the school would turn out along the length of the pier. Tarpon fishermen would be waiting for them at the last "T"
that is the part of the peir that was called the "Tarpon Hole".
Back in '62 or '63 a bunch of tarpon were coming up the coast as they approached the pier a 10ft to 12ft Hammerhead chased them upon the beach right where the the pier starts to enter the water. The Hammerhead beached itself and 5 tarpon. At the time alot of beach go'ers were parked along the beach next to the pier. I'll never forget the people running for their lives and all the scared faces. The Hammerhead was able to work itself back into the water but if I remember right not all the tarpon did.

Caught alot of tarpon off Bob Hall peir back in the day. Alot of the fish were in the 100lb plus class. Your post and story made me get some of the old pictures out.....I caught my first tarpon when I was 13 and didn't stop fishing for them untill they stop their migration.

I don't know if the pictures are still up but Howards Bar-B-Q downtown
had alot of good pictures up some years back. Alot of the pic's were of Bob Hall and the tarpon and sharks that were caught there. If your really interested.
I have a few myself and one day might post them...right now I don't have a scanner.
