Made it out Sat to the north sticks a little around noon. Posted the pics of the water spout on a previous report. Called it early due to storms rolling in. Worked out good, made it home with plenty of college football on tv. Decided to try it again at the same place on Sun only this time get and early start and set up shop. Woke up around 3am and headed out in search of skipjacks under the JFK causeway. Boxed 3 along with 7 trout that were close to 15" along with a 18" snook. Only kept the skippies and released everything else, was on a mission. Hit the north sticks again around 6,630ish right as the sun was rising. Been a while since we've hit the beach round that time. Peaceful and awesome to witness.
Whiting were once again thick in the wade/first gut, (still not sure the difference between the two), so chunked out some fresh live mullet to the other side of the first visible sandbar on two rods. Hard to see the other sandbars that early in the morning. Once noon hit the bars were easily visible. Why is that? Meanwhile was rigging up my new 900h Daiwa (thanks to Roys for all their help! Great staff with plenty of knowledge.), first time hitting the water. Ran a chunk of skip out on my home made leaders. (worked out pretty good, but need to upgrade. 175# 6' nylon coated stainless with 6' of 125# flourcarbon mono) to what I thought was at least 300 yards, but when I paddled back to shore n checked the rod realized that the Daiwa had plenty more line to give. Oh well, let it soak for about 3 hours. With nothing. Meanwhile......
Fresh skippie hit a 4" live mullet. Fun to catch too.
Fresh bait. Mom was tearing up the whiting and just tossed them all back. She just loves catching something. Bout 9 my Daiwa Sealine X50 HA gets a run and I box my biggest smack, 32" on a 6" live mullet.
Its about 11am and my uncle and his friend show up along with my dad and I decide to rebait my big rod. Run it out at least 300 yards and within an hour.....
My biggest shark to date Taped out right at 5' Did it without a harness and am still paying for it today
Thanks to the crew that were out there hittin it hard. Helped out alot! Look between us n check out the fins.
Cool pic

Money shot
Released for another day
After about 15min of trying to calm down from the excitemen of my first big one with the new rod n reel, I rund out another chunk of skippie. 40 min later....FISH ON
This time, the man and kid beside me who were camped out with a sweet set-up hooked me up and allowed me to borrow their shark belt. Big thanks to them. Sorry, terrible with names.
Second Blacktip of the day measured 57 1/2"
Another break consisting of a cold one and a breather and yakked out another chunk of skippie. Little bit farther this time......30 min later, fish on
58" Blacktip.
Unbelievable i'm thinking. But decide to try it one more time. This time had to have ran the chunk of skippie out at least 400+ yards. By the time I got back to shore within 20min while I was standing right in front of the reel, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! 3 good tugs n set the hook and its on once again
58" Blacktip. Slap plum wore out!
Caught another after the first Blacktip, but line went slack to reveal a small 30" sharpnose was on. No fight at all and released for another day.
"Hell of a day at sea sir!"
Sunday. Went to the same spot close to the north sticks and only managed two small sharpnose that I didn't even know were on until I checked the bait and an 18" red on cut mullet close to the second sandbar. Sorry for being soo long, but I will never forget this experience. Good luck to all out there and you don't know unless you go!
Officially hooked! I want a six footer!!!!!! _________________ I'm a Mawg: Half Man, Half Dog. I'm my own best friend! |

Way to break in the new reel. How many yards of line can you fit and what is the test?
Good job

Sorey for the delay. On that 900h Daiwa, have 650 yards of 80# Dacron test. And all of the sharks were caught on Sunday and got skunked on Monday. Holiday weekend messed up my days considering I had a 3 day weekend! _________________ I'm a Mawg: Half Man, Half Dog. I'm my own best friend! |
