SO...., since the nesting season is over, does that mean the limit has changed? Or do we still have to carefully drive ( as always even prior to the regulation ), or still maintain the speed limit? Just wondering.....

PINS original press announcement last March stated the reduction from 25 to 15 mph was to run from April 1 to July 31. The C-T's editorial this morning didn't say anything about the expiration, I haven't seen any new press releases on the subject, and the PINS recording of beach conditions doesn't mention speed limits, so I guess you'll have to ask at the gate or call the ranger station.

riotglide, haven't seen a post from you for over a month. Can you answer kkb's question?

wow. the comments are written better and contain more pertinent information than the article.

you missed the mark again, CT. and I'm betting that the writer of the article was a turtle patrol volunteer who is a turtle-hugger who idolizes Donna.

sickening.

Just got back from mile marker 5, down past the 4wd sign. Speed limit back up to 25 mph, confirmed as well at the guard station.

The cloudy/sandy water in the surf doesn't extend nearly as far down on PINS v. the water around BHP and packery.

Thanks for keeping us "Out of Towners" apprised Trash Heap.

That article attempts to use the rebounding nest numbers as success for the nesting turtles. " In 1996, six nest were found. Last year 195 nest were found."
Reading between the lines one can see that the Turtles were not seeking out PINS as a nesting spot. It is becoming apparent that the Staff of PINS have "hatched" a plan many years ago(1996?) that would tug at the heart strings of America concerning the plight of these Turtles. It appears that they wish to wield the reins of this momentum and guide it towards a closure of automobile traffic down this National Seashore.
The comments and replies that follow the article reflect a mood of resentment towards the staff at PINS. I'm sure this was not the goal of that staff unless it was directed at a select few groups.
If the staff at PINS was able to attract nesting Turtles to PINS, I'm sure they would have no trouble doing the same on another Island and then see the Monster they created!

page 6 second bullet under section 1

http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/pdfs/species/kempsridley_5yearreview.pdf

now you know where they're getting their ideas for CLOSING PINS TO FISHING.

and another one. kind of old and boring, but some trully damning evidence. start reading about page 65

wow pork , you really do your homework. Let me ask this, is there a turtle shortage? If there is , it hasn't affected me at all. Now, if there was an overabundance of turtles what would the benefits be besides a new cannery going up ? Hey I'm just asking....

PINS's Chief of Science and Resource Jim Lindsay, AKA HardScience, has begun an on-line dialogue in response to those who posted comments at the website given at the beginning of this thread. This is a most welcome opportunity to comment further, and I've taken it.

In case you haven't guessed, I hate statistics; that was the only course I ever took at A&M in which I didn't make an A or a B.

I wouldn't say there's a turtle shortage, however the USFWS sez there's not enough to consider de-listing the species. early field work and some *PR* by Dr. Hildebrand resulted in the realization that the entire species of kemps ridley turtles *PRIMARILY* nest in Rancho Nuevo, Mex in an arribada style, as Trash Heap sez, to overload the predators and increase odds of making it down the beach and into the water. Gull billed terns I imagine would do a number on those little guys.

to do your homework for you, some of the info links I posted include the fact that the management team in rancho nuevo shut down sailing and fishing within 4 miles of the beach at rancho nuevo. they have also shut down driving during the nesting season. there's more history there too. and it doesn't take a large leap of faith to realize where PINS personnel are getting their Recovery Plan information and *ideas* from.

in addition, the recovery of the species was doing ok in Mexico until the IXTOC oil spill. that was the trigger that got conservation biologists and other turtle people to realize that the kemps ridley needed more protection, a kind of "bank" of turtles bred in captivity away from rancho nuevo to protect the species from going extinct, and the most important result was the steps taken to create a "headstart" program, where some of the turtles were taken to NMFS (oddly enough) in Galveston where some were bred and raised in captivity (the papers note a "turtle ranch" was also set up by an endowment in the caymans by some really rich turtle folks from florida).

The headstart program released turtles with "living tags", where pieces were taken from the tops and bottoms of turtles when they're young and switched, making light and dark spots in opposite sides of the turtle (don't make me pull out the technical terms, I promise you'd stop reading right here).

as a SIDE NOTE of the headstart program, some turtles were imprinted with sand from padre island, and successive headstarted turtle releases were released not only offshore from boats, but also at various beaches in order to establish a secondary nesting site. dang if it didn't work, at least a little over the years, to where we are now.

what does all this mean? are we going to have the turtle canneries pop back up when the feds say there's enough? No. the feds won't de-list the species until they see a beautiful HD color movie clip of an arribada at rancho Nuevo (or somewhere else) that rivals the old sixties clip touted by Dr. Hildebrand.

whew. ridiculous amount of information, sorry I got started. you'll have to put the remaining pieces together from here, and most importantly, you will have to realize where the turtle program here on the island, NMFS in Galveston, and the turtle groups in rancho nuevo are taking the program, and what it means to anyone who is a fisherman and not a kemps ridley turtle.

I'm almost sorry for the long post. read the papers, you will gain a better understanding yourself

Is it me or does it appear the only positive comments on this subject come from those that have a firm grip on the government teat? They say the program started in 1978 but the first stretch of beach was closed to traffic in 1968 when the park opened. I would hardly call 117 nests this year from the park a success for 40 years of work. These are simply stragglers from Mexico. The actual numbers probably haven't changed much but the number of people looking have. When I see a turtle, I just take a picture. What is the definition of a native species? Where is the proof that these turtles are native? As I have said all along, these are a bunch of turtle bureaucrats playing the public and their intention is to close South Beach and Park Superintendent Escato has taken their bait hook, line, and sinker.
