Had a terrific day Saturday on the sand in the LLM. High winds made it tough sledding but I got 8 reds on the fly. Closest cast was about 50 feet so it took a lot of targets to land 8, but great all the same. Spoon flies and chartreuse/white clousers did the trick. I saw no tails at all - had to spot them coming at about 250 feet then follow them in. I will say that I also fished the west side with Roel Villanueva or Scott Sparrow poling - unbelievable number of trout in the 25-30" class. Had shots a some lifetime trout on the fly, just no takers - still a gas. By the way, the Curlew is a dream boat for ultra shallow water (and I own a Majek scooter).

awesome report Rusty, glad you made it out and were successful. did you run all the way down there from here?!

No, drove down and stayed on the Arroyo. I talked to Mr. Rockstar Sunday night and Mrs. Rockstar this morning. Let's try to hook up with him and throw some flies before he heads back to sea. Really interesting about the huge trout down south. Can't be the one over 25 rule - we have that. Seems too soon for the lower limit to do that. Maybe the hurricane or all of the above, but it was impressive! One crystal clear difference between the LLm and the ULM is the amount of boat traffic.

that sounds fun Rusty, he should be back for another couple of weekends. Mrs. Rockstar has a place we can stay in mansfield. how is that run from mansfield to the arroyo in the curlew?

we have no water up here right now, very low. our typical sightcasting flats are dang near dry.

The run was not bad at all. We stayed on the sand flats east of the ICW, going around the Saucer. Water was at the top of wading booties. Like I said, the Curlew is pretty impressive! Have you seen their Lamiflex system for use in deeper water? I had not, but it is very clever. When you turn it on, it brings air in through an intake on the side of the console, forcing it down beneath a plenum then out a large number of small holes through the hull in the tunnel. It breaks the vacuum that draws water into the tunnel, now converting the hull to a non-tunnel design. At the same rpm's, the boat takes off like a rocket, nearly doubling the speed. When you get to shallow water, you turn it off and resume operation as a tunnel boat. If I win the lottery, I'll but you one so you can see!!

If you ever need an extra hand on a LLM trip I would really like to give it a go. I've flyfished in lost of places, but never made the run down to the LLM. Sounds like fun.

Ditto on the amount of boat traffic in the LLM vs. ULM. I was out with a guide a few years back, and he became upset when another boat ran about 300 yards from us. Most folks up north would consider 300 yards a "courtesy"! I'll be picking up a new-to-me Majek RFL in a week or two and can't wait to haul it down there. There I go- adding to the traffic (LOL).

I was at 9-Mile about a month ago and saw school after school of black drum on the eastern sand flats. They were pretty picky, but managed four on clousers and a tiny little shrimp pattern that I had never used before...

21 RFL. She's a beauty. Well cared-for 1992 model. The motor is a 2002 Zuke with 20 original hours! Previously owned by a little ol' man who only drove it to the flats on Sundays.

Thanks for the compliment. When I first realized the numbers of fish, I thought for sure I'd catch a boat load. Quickly found out it weren't so easy. They seem a little pickier than red drum.
