Last time we had a chance to go offshore out of packery and hit some close rigs, we trolled for Kings. Got skunked. My At what depth are the Kings usually at? I placed a 3oz weight about a foot n a half away from the ribbonfish. No takers. We also had a couple of kingfish leader setups with a small weight already attached to the tip of the the first hook, almost like a jig head. We tied off to a rig and I freelined that one and had success with my first king and lost another. Any suggestions, photos and ideas will be greatly appreicated. I visit swellinfo.com and use that site as a guide to plan offshore trips. This is going to be an awesome week for folks to get out into the gulf!!!! Low winds and surf predicted up until Sunday!

Try setting up some drifts along side the platforms, start well up from the platforms and drift well past the platform, I get my best fish well out from the platforms. We also get all of the lines out and then hit one big Chum dump, catch our limit in one to two drifts if the fish are around. I use a lightly weighted three hook kingfish rig to get it down in the water column some with a ribbonfish, and two hook wire sardine rigs for top water. I always run some skirts on my ribbonfish. _________________ Capt. Ross L. McElwee

Years ago I went fishing with a crusty old salt out of Port A. We trolled ribbonfish on a two hook rig with no weight and slew the kings that day: 14 fish for the 3 of us!!! We WERE on the blue water though, right at the edge were it meets the green. That day the edge was 14 miles out.
Make sure you troll the weed lines too. You just might pick up a wahoo or dorado. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM, GOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ Dave

| the 3 ounce weight may have been your problem... next time you go out, try no weight, or just enough weight to get it 10-20 feet below the surface. |

Thats my question. Are Kingfish bottom dwellers, mid, or top?
Thanks. _________________ I'm a Mawg: Half Man, Half Dog. I'm my own best friend! |

I'd say mid to top. I've got my biggest kings pretty close to the surface, if not right on surface.. _________________ "If you love something let it go. If it comes back to you gaff it and throw it on ice."

Water clarity is everything. Kings can be caught right outside the breakers IF the water is clear and there's bait around. In Destin, the larger "smoker" kings are frequently caught by trolling right off the beach.
Google "catching Texas kingfish". Lots comes up. _________________ Dave

Are you talking abou Destin, FL? If so, I can vouch for big kings being close to the beach. I've cuaght tons of good kings from the piers in Florida (Pensacola, Navarre, Destin, Panama City). It's true, if the water isn't pure mud, there are a lot of very good kings very close to the beach. In fact, a few weeks ago (I think late May), I hooked a 20+lb king from Packery. Unfortunately, I was cut off. But, it was cool to see him sky on the live mullet I was fishing. |

probably too much weight. I use 1/4 to 1oz max. Sometimes none at all.
Kingfish are ambush predators and hit their prey from below. You'll catch them mid water column to the top. _________________ Vegetarian (n)...Old indian word for bad hunter |
