ok guys here is the story, i went on a guided duck hunt back in January, and i ended shooting a really nice mature red head that even the guide would have mounted, it being my first year to duck hunt i decided to go for it. i called around to get prices and i cam across Safari Taxidermy. i spoke with a gentlemen named John, he said it would cost $200, and only three months at the most. for the past couple of months i have called, left messages, and emails for him to find out to status of my mount, he never responds to me. finally i call from my work phone and he asnwers in two rings. i tell him who i am, and he says the he hasnt even started the mount, and that it usually takes 9 months to a year. i told him thats not what he told me in the first place when i gave him a hundred dollar deposit. i was pretty mad so i told i would go pick up my deposit and duck and go so where else. he said i could have the duck but he would have to keep the deposit. What do yall think i should do? Why should i lose my $100 for him to have just kept in the freezer? i have a reciept that stated what the final cost would be and the record of my deposit. Should i just leave it there and risk never getting it back? |

Nine months to a year is not unreasonable. The guy I use for waterfowl typically takes at least a year. If the taxidermist does good work, I would be patient and wait things out....note...there are taxidermists out there that do not require deposits. You just have to be willing to look around and make a few calls.
Sounds like the biggest problem with yours in communication....B8 |

| I don't know the guy, but if he told me 3 months, i would have been p-o-ed. Sorry for your inconvienence. I think taxidermists are regulated by parks and wildlife. If so, talk with them and see what your options are. I would think that if he has'nt started on it, he should'nt have a problem forking over the deposit. |

I've had plenty of ducks mounted and never got one back in two months. If the taxidermist is good, then waiting 9 months is not unreasonable. If you like his work, then I would leave the duck with him, so you don't lose out on the down payment. Never rush a taxidermist or a woman cooking your meal...you might not like the outcome. _________________ CARPE DIEM |

| John did my Pintail and it came out really nice. I would just try to wait it out if you can. As far as the time-frame goes when I did mine he told me in order to get it faster I could pay in full when I dropped it off. I did and I think mine took around 3 1/2 months. |

| I actually had a similar experience with John and my Pintail. I dropped it off, he thought he'd have it done in 3 months, but didn't. It was getting close to the time for me to get transferred, and i started getting nervous. I also had a hard time contacting him. I was worried about moving to Jax and having to figure out how to get my duck from Corpus... But, he got it done in about 5-6 months and it looks absolutely amazing! I would say be patient. A few months in the scheme of things won't matter that much.... |
