Coming back from Aransas Pass on the Ferry, my brother and I saw an amazing sight. Hundreds upon hundreds of bull reds, just stacked up upon each other. Amazing! They were stacked up on the far left ferry slip. As soon as the ferry left, we went back to our car, amazed. The ferry worker came up to us and explained that there is no legal way to fish for them.
We spent the entire weekend thinking up ways to get them, including building a small submarine, forming a religion, and filing lawsuits against the government to allow us to fish for them. Bribing ferry workers, Sneaking onto the pilings. Building a cloaking device for my kayak.. etc, etc. Crazy stuff. Anyone got any other crazy ideas for this? Please share them. I did discover the "no fish zone" around the slips. Fair enough.
This couldnt have been a random event. There were simply too many.

How about a trench coat and a snoopy pole hidden up the sleeve. You could spool it with 50lb. power pro and put some HT-100 drag washers in the reel.
Just stand by the rail and drop a gold spoon into the herd of Redfish and as the ferry took off you could troll the spoon through the fish, hook up, and then I have no idea how you could land it without getting caught. See, now you got me started.

Ernie
P.S. They are always there in that spot. They are feeding on everything that the propwash churns up. _________________ " Good God, somebody get me a nurse " |

well 50# test power pro is great but would jump it up to 80# or 120# for landing it..
just like Tarzan said, cast out when you take off.. well now that you caught the fish.. just hide the rod in back of truck with other rods and drive off.. by the time they saw what happened you would be down the road throwing the red in your ice chest and dogging game wardens and all the cats in the neighborhood that you pull into. _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

There have been massive amounts of fish at the ferry forever though the bull redfish numbers do seem to increase every year.
About 15-20 years ago, there used to be only one ferry running at night and MANY times my brother, father and I would run over cast a few times then drive off before the ferry returned. Often, no one would see you but occasionally the ferry from across the channel would shine a spot light. In addition to catching redfish, I caught some big trout and once saw a shark swimming around. The ferries hold TONS of fish.
Of course, back then, there was no bulkhead on the Port A side, so we could also wade and in the winter go gigging for flounder.
If you really want to hook oversized reds, fish the end of the jetties on the channel side towards the end of a strong outgoing tide. I have on many occasions landed 15 or more before getting burnt out on it because I wanted to catch fish I could eat. Though I only fish lures, live perch or mullet on the bottom works extremely well. |

What a site, it is too bad you can't find a way to figure that out. But it does happen at the Jetties too you just don't usually seem em like you can there. _________________ Work hard to play harder!!!

Ok, I have the answer...Hand line. I have seen guys from central America use hand lines to catch Tarpon on TV and this gave me the idea. Get a spool of 80lb. leader line from Academy(the thin spools), a glove, and crimp a good spoon to the end of the line. Then as the ferry takes off, toss the line into the school of fish. With the gloved hand holding the spool you could add and release pressure for drag and use the other hand on the line itself for play. Keep some needle nose pliers in your pocket for a quick release when you get it up to the rail.

Ernie
P.S. I have done this a few times before on a pier and it works very well, but takes some practice. I also have tried it in the surf but have not mastered a very good cast yet. _________________ " Good God, somebody get me a nurse " |

I've seen kids in Mexico use a coke bottle and outcast some of your average folks on the piers around here
and I've had to chase oversized drum with the boat before in the bays, but geez, using a ferry? there's almost no sport in that at all _________________

Passing the time while you cross over the channel by C&R a Redfish on a handline sounds pretty sporting to me. What sounds very unsporting in my opinion is chasing fish in a $30.000 boat. I personally chase my fish on foot in the surf.

LOL, Tarzan, you have me all wrong, don't assume too much about me, and don't get your feathers ruffled, remember to check out the emoticon, which means I was being sarcastic about it being sporting. and I'm a true bluff rat, my rig sure as heck didn't cost 30K!!!
I think the most sporting part of all of it would be handlining the fish and C&R without getting thrown into the prop-wash by the deckhands.
and Ernie, I enjoy chasing fish on foot the most too. relax man. guess we all need to go fishin. _________________

WORD!!!!!
I kayak to my fish.
About catching those ferry fish....
I have seen more than just a few of those expensive boats pull up on the AP side and work the edge of the ferry landings from the gambling boat dock side. I watched one guy one weekend. He had different folks with him each day. He anchored up out from the landings and then would cast a heavy bait just inside the edge of the landing bulkheads. Almost immediately they would have a fish on. He would give that rod to somebody. Then he would cast the next rod in and almost immediately got a hook up. Give that rod to another person. Grab the net and land the first one, then the second. Repeat the process. I watched this guy all weekend doing this as I was coming and going. |

Porkfetus, no harm meant. I am just hot over the boat thing right now. I have a good buddy who just bought a very bad... boat and he won't shut up about how he just slays the fish and now he wants to guide..LOL
I told him that I could probably go chase down a 12 point buck in my 4Runner and run it over in a field somewhere, maybe then I could be a hunting guide
