I want to make a trip to the state water rigs when the wind settles. Please provide some ideas on what works best for Red Snapper leaders. I bought some 200# mono yesterday to build some leaders, but thought it might be a little over kill. Thanks in advance.

200# isn't really bad since it holds up for a couple trips in a row.

Which reminds me, I need to build some snapper leaders too Surprised

I use 80lb. cajun leader material (thinking of switching to flouro). Just tie a simple knocker rig. A knocker rig consists of a barrel swivel on top, whatever length of leader you want, an egg sinker with or without beads on either side and a 7-9 circle hook tied on the end with a palomar knot.
I have caught many a fish on the nearshore rigs with that. Of course, my mom has plenty of luck with a good ol' double drop piano wire leader. If you do use a knocker, I suggest you make some blanks. Just crimp the barrel swivel to one end and leave the rest "blank". That way, you can check out the conditions when you get where you are going before you commit to a certain sized sinker. Hope this helps.

I use 80# mono or real light wire.

If using egg sinker above hook, do not place to far away from hook or it will wrap around your line descending if let down to quickly.

Can you catch them on artificials?

Set one pole off the back with just a circle hook and free line a 6"-12" live fish. Make a hand line and tie some of that 200# leader and a large circle hook and a 3# weight (do not use wire in case a large shark hits it) tie it off to the middle of your boat and bait it with a 12"-24" live fish. This will allow you to fish for snapper on the bow and have a shot at a Grouper, amberjack or ling off the back.

I use a modified slip sinker rig, where the egg sinker won't slide down all the way to the hooks.

Two hook rig, about 4/5" apart. 6/0 circles, 6 oz sinker.

As for baits, frozen squid always works, as does cut bait of most any kind.

For dead bait, I use a whole menhaden with the front hook through the jaws, and the back hook in the meat somewhere.

The absolute best bait in my opinion is a live perch, or big piggy/grunt.

Rig the front hook ahead of the dorsal fin, and the rear hook towards the tail. Give a little play between the two hooks so he can swim naturally.

With bigger perch, leave the bottom hook dangling.

As for artificials, a Snapper Slapper is hard to beat. I like white, with a whole menhaden rigged to it. The grub tails Snapper Slapper makes are also good for extra action.

A green Snapper Slapper with a green grub on it (use a lighter one!) is also quite deadly on ling.
