| Heres just an idea.Get the local cops to the area. With the cops this may be a gray area,so inturn they call TPWD or the game warden and hopefully the problem is solved. They might respond to a call from the cops . |

These aren't the kind of guys you want mad at you. They obviously have no problem conducting illegal activities.
It was actually pretty brave, not to mention admirable, to remove the fish from the net. While the guy was watching.
I think that a call to the GW is the best approach to this situation. |
you're right, it was admirable. most people would've just kept fishing.
i have encountered too many drunks and weirdos from growing up bass fishing in austin, to down here in the bay and on PINS so i fish with a little firepower these days just in case, therefore i would've chopped his net up and asked him if he had a problem with it and hopefully he would've |

| I understand the train of thought, but a thousand pieces of gill net is not what the estuary system needs. |

For every net you destroy they have 10 more made up ready to set. What you need to do is cut up the net and personally take to where the commercial fisherman hang out and give it to them, and explain your therory of conservation to them. They just might give up illegal fishing altogether. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| A WHILE BACK CCPD WAS GIVEN AUTHORITY TO ENFORCE TPWD LAWS. NOW IF THEY DO OR NOT IS A DIFFERENT STORY, YOU MIGHT GET LUCKY AND GET A FELLOW FISHERMAN TO REPSPOND. |

| Hats off to you for taking ethical action. If TPWD number is busy, call the local PD and/or Sheriff's office. Also, if you don't have the number, call 1411. Last resort call the DPS especially if you have a vehicle involved. I would not cut it up, but let the law enforcement folks deal with it. You are destroying evidence that they will need in the prosecution. |

Good call, Shorty.
When I lived in the Bluff back in the '80s, a neighbor asked me if I wanted to go run nets one night with him and his brother. They had a Stoner with a below deck compartment to stow the gill nets.
I went to the TPW office and met with the senior GW there and told them what was up. He said that I could call him when I head out with these guys, and he would ensure that they were picked up. He also told me that I would be arrested too if I was with them.
I don't think that they were ever caught. Heck, it might be his son running the net that you found. _________________

Funnies aside, thanks for the report.
This number is plugged into my phone, some of you might want to do it now for any future "incidents", as I'm betting these folks won't stop. Especially if they didn't get busted, or like IMS says they didn't see the light and change their ways for the better in the name of conservation, LOL

Very few of you have no clue about the history of the commercial fishermen. You see them in a completely bad light. As is everything there are two sides to the story and oh what a story it is. I find no fault with eitherside what i do find is a piece of history that will soon oneday fall to the wayside. However there are a couple of advid local fisherman that will soon know the otherside of the story through time. Its the wild wild west AT ITS BEST. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Went fishing with a buddy of mine at Choke a few years ago ...we kept getting our lures caught up while trolling. Picked up an unmarked trot line and found numerous violations....using bass as bait, etc. We proceeded to unhook every piece of bait, cutting off hooks where necessary. A short time later a very pizzzed off guy with his wife and kids floated over and demanded his line back. The guy looked like he was ready to fight and I believe he would have if his kids weren't in the boat. I figured we did the right thing but it almost ended bad, nonetheless. If I came across this situation now I'd prolly just call the game warden and watch the line..
