I am looking at purchasing a 9mm hand gun for the household.
Not knowing much about the subject I looked around over the weekend.
Initially, the Glock 17 stood out although there are certainly others that cost less.
I am more concerned about quality than cost as I only have to by it once.
Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Damo

what I would do if I were in the market, is buy that gun in the classifieds that mrbacklash is selling... that's a good deal, and the .40 ammo is just as available, and more potent.

I probably should have added that this will be Christmas gift for my wife so I am going to go with a 9mm.
Nothing quite says I Love You at Christmas like a new gun!!!
Next Christmas may be a bit more of a challenge.

I have shot both a Glock and H&K USP.....the H&K is by far the best I've handled.

H&K is also almost twice the price. If you are looking for a Glock type weapon I recommend going to Sharp Shooter and giving all the Polymer, striker fired weapons a try. Such ad the S&W M&P, Glock 17/19, Springfield XD, ect. all these guns function in a similar manner and are comparable in quality. It just comes down to what fits you/your wife the best. I prefer the S&W M&P, have close to 10,000 rounds through my 9mm and I will bet my reputation/life on that gun and its quality. Just a heads up the Glocks grip tends to be a little less comfortable in most shooters hands, just an observation. Well good luck and let us know what you get. Take care.

go with the smith and wesson 9mm
usually bass pro sells them for 375 with two clips.. they are nearly identical to the glock and great for the household.. If anyone other than you plans on shooting a 40 (wifey) good luck getting them to hold it straight after one shot... much more kickback than the 9

Sure wish you would rethink the .40 caliber. It is far superior to a 9mm and does not have enough more recoil to be an issue. My wife shoots a Glock .40 and swears by it. Also, I don't think you can beat a Glock for reliability, shootibility, and ease of operation. No whistles or bells, just a reliable gun and that's what you want for self defense.

Had my Glock .40 cal stolen in Orange Grove at the Stripes about three months ago. Walked in to get a drink, thought I had locked the door (back door not shut all of the way) and within a couple of minutes GONE! Replaced it with a Springfield XD .40. Nice gun, but the Glock was way more accurate.

In response to the choice of 9mm I think you are right on! It is a great round. It is cheap, and with the proper choice of ammo it is a very capable defense round. Just remember the 9mm got a bad rap from its performance with the military and early use in law enforcement and both shot FMJ ammo which is good for nothing but practice at the range. A good round such as a Hydra-Shok, Magsafe Swat/Defender or Powershock will do a lot of damage to a band guy and cause very little damage to anything else. In my mind a weapon for defense has to meet a few requirements after that it is all up to the shooters preference. A defense had gun must function with flawless reliability, fit the shooters hand, be practical as a fighting weapon, be of a caliber that is practical to shoot and shoot often and be of the largest caliber the shooter can shoot effectively (within reason, after the 9mm/.38 size it does not matter, I am mainly referring to smaller rounds like the .22,.25 and .32). Remember buy good rounds for defense and keep the FMJ's for the range.

I have a Baby Desert Eagle in 9mm that I really like. It has a nice crisp trigger without a half an inch of slop in it. It is a smaller weapon with only a ten round magazine but it fits nice in my hands. My kids like to shoot it as well and its not so big they have a hard time handling it.
Here is a link to see it if your interested.

Hope this helps, seems everyone has their favorites this just happens to be mine.

Love the Glocks, reliable, accurate and wear very well..
the only thing I do not like with them is the safety.... I have only had one misfire(operator error ... me) in 15000 rounds.
but if someone is not experienced with semi-auto hand gun and if you have kids or little visitors, I would look at something that has dual safety -- grip and finger or at least the regular safety switch..

I have/had 3 Glocks. A 32, a 29 and my wife's 19 that was stolen.

I blew the 29 up with some hot 10mm loads, but Glock repaired the pistol under warranty with no questions asked and a 4 day turn around.

I carry a Kimber 1911 10mm every day, but the I have no real complaints with the Glocks. They are tools. Simple, functional, relatively cheap and reliable. I just prefer the way a 1911 shoots.

We replaced my wife's Glock 19 with a Springfield XD sub-compact .40. It's basically the same thing with a couple of extras. Namely the grip safety and a better loaded chamber indicator.

IMO the Glock and the copies are all great. Just figure out which one feels the best.

And also, the .40 has little recoil and ammo is only slightly higher than 9mm. I would go that route if it were me. The .40 would be the very minimum I would carry in a primary self defense pistol.

No, I wouldn't want to get shot with a 9mm, but I believe in the theory that you should carry the most powerful round you are comfortable with. It's one of the few fire fight decisions that you have complete control of, and deadlier terminal ballistics equates to a greater margin of error for the shooter and faster incapacitation of the criminal.

I will only carry a 45 - because, as the old ranger said - they don't make a 50!! Evil or Very Mad
