God bless my momma! My step-dad is 65 years old now, and is reeling from the fact of the passing of my natural father who has been in Corpus from 1971 until a few weeks ago before his passing. He has been reverting back to childhood memories of Ira Loveday and how he "helped" him land that alleged 19 foot sawbill shark/fish off of Bob Hall pier around 1957. It is kinda bothering momma that he is having this post mid-life-like-crisis -- especially since he has been all over www.classmates.com and reliving his Carroll High athletics and teaching career at Del Mar College with other classmates or students.

For the 1957 story:

In the post the legendary Billy Sandifer Corpus guide confirmed Ira must me be in his mid sixties by now, the same as my step-dad.

Mansfield Mauler,

Come on! Before Tyler's site gets hacked again hold your pre-judgment. It's gonna be reprinted tomorrow for posterity's sake. I will not let these stories that us "old folk" have go down the memory drain, especially when we are still living!

Even Ira Lovejoy has confirmed the story through his grandson -- albeit, with different measurments. Heck, the story is over 50 years old now!

I have precious few memories in life, so please let it go!

"Lovejoy" or Loveday?

Call him, I have his phone number if you need it.

Rudy? Dont be a behind, so to speak. I initially posted this story two years ago and now -- only NOW -- called Ira a "Lovejoy" instead of "Loveday"? ?Big whooptin' deal! Tyler has my email account and password, and can verify what Ira's own grandson told me in private! (I'll give it to you if you want.)

In a vain attempt to trash me, as I initially percieved it, and may heaven forbid i'm wrong, you inadvertently ended up in the garbage heap yourself. Had you not spent more than a few fleeting glimpses in the original thread, wafting and waving in the floatsam and jetsum of its glory you would have been blindl-sided by merely reprinting what Billy Sandifer wrote, in-partum, but not the exactant under Tyler's wonderful verbatim reply; of which you missed?

Son, us old timers may be getting a little old in the head but please refrain from memories that are vaguely ours but those of our parents. We remember as best we can recall. And when in doubt, as you pointed out, in a vain attempt to make a fool out of me, my initial post two years ago said "loveday." Pardon me! I never knew the man, but the "old....and I mean "old, dude! salts" like Billy Sandifer knew him......Be careful with your accusations, ok?

And I thought "old school iconoclasts like Mencken were dead!"

No big deal, I was just confirming a minor detail. I'm sure everyone knew who you were talking about.

Rudy,

It's ok, bud. I'm only 35. Its just that i look 28-29 as I'm often told with my long hair, and most of your college age girls like steak and seafood over your college budget of ramen noodles and totino's party pizza! ....hahahahaha!!! I'm teasing.

By the way, you are in San Antonio. I lost my job today. I may be moving that way. Plus Big John lives there.... We can car pool, with both of ya in the bed of my truck, holding a dozen rods, crab traps and a few tackle boxes....Sound like a plan? ....Serious....I'm single now and looking to move to Corpus even if I no longer make 19/hr. I'd rather starve with roomies like in college but be able to fish the mighty Oso, PINS and Laguna!

Sound like a plan?

Plus you would love adopted Unclle Johnny French. He knows how I purposely mispell and mix proper and colloquial language in an attempt to tease him.

He, like Tyler, Sea Bass, Big John and Oz are my faves.....

Perhaps you read the Sarah Palin post I made? I haven't had the time to get to it yet. My cousin, a Corpus ex-patriate claims he washed the family car and such......and I immediatedly called a bluff, or b.s. story.

I'll address that soon. For example, his father posted to our family's rather large genealogy site that "my dad was so poor, that he took the safety pin out of his pants that held 'em up, to fashion a fishin' hook so he could come home with dinner!"....Come on! Story may be true.....but I hate liars.....But it does make for a good story, don't it?

Oh the great fishing stories and photographs of Ira, Norman Howard and Wayne MacBee, have been astonishing to me for years. Those great years off of Bob Hall were something else. These guys and many more are truely fishing legends to me..................

I helped beach that fish. I was 15 yrs old. Bob Hall was a real fishing peir then. You could put a 20 dollar bill on the rail of the Tarpon bench leave it overnight and it would be there in the morning. Lot of great fisherman .

Hmmmmm .... not to instigate here but I still see a couple of the Lovedays now and then.

I mentioned the discussion we had a year or two ago about this and one of them just smiled and shook his head and said ..... " It was daddy (Troy Sr.) that caught that fish, not Ira..."

I don't have a clue .... just telling you what he said.
