USE A HEAVY MONO LEADER WITH AN 18/0 CIRCLE HOOK, SKIPPY,WHITING OR BLUE FOR BAIT. _________________ Be the kind of man that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says "Oh Crap, he's up!" |

Use a skipjack fish - not our bud Skipjack as bait. They are like candy to sharks and big reds. Catch a big skippy, filet it, and hang a filet on a couple 18-0 hooks and get ready. That bait will not sit more than a few minutes before being picked up. _________________ GOBZA!!!

1) A leader that catches the most sharks?
2) A leader that catches the biggest sharks?
3) A leader that is the most versatile?
etc.
There are so many different variations of shark leaders that one leader could out perform another in the right situation. Here is my take on making shark leaders. I like leaders that have the following characteristics. I would like to say that this is my personal opinion and some will not agree with the methods here.
1) When you begin shark fishing, your leader should catch a lot of smaller sharks. Bigger sharks take experience to be safe.
2) The hooks should be circles. Circle hooks provide better chances of survival for the shark over J-hooks. I've had less gut hooks with circles than J's.
3) The leader should have the ability to cast or yak. Versatility is large in my book. Time is precious and if a leader can cast or yak I am ahead of the game.
4) The leader should be simple. Electrical tape, extra snaps, divided traces, just complicate things. One solid piece of mono is good enough to get you started.
My leader design consists of the following materials to make.
20/0 circle hook
9 feet of 400 to 600 pound mono
4 crimps to fit the mono
4 stop beads (Hobby Lobby, Sister's hobby kit)
Snap Swivel (200 to 400 pound)
Barrel Swivel (300 to 400 pound)
