Can anyone rec. a kayak for a beginner yaker? I want to go drop off baits past a casting distance and maybe once I learn enough, I'd like to try a little change of water color fishing. I have several senator reels and would like to get full use of them. Also, I previously purchased a sit on top kayak from Academy. It was a nice sit on top 8 ft. yak. I was never able to get out past the first sandbar. The waves would kill me each time. Some people have told me I need to read the beach a little better but I can usually find areas where the beach water is leaving the beach. Others have told me the yak I am using (a gift from my kids) was not meant for the surf. Mine was not a brand, Ocean Kayak .

Ocean Kayak has probably the most versatile kayaks out there.

I am particularly fond of the the Malibu 2, Malibu 2 XL, Scrambler XT, and the Trident 15 Angler series kayaks.

Go to texaskayakfisherman.com and read the threads posted by the BTB guys. Cobra Fish N Dive is one of their favorite yaks for the surf and shark fishing.

to me the O.K. Frenzy was the best at cutting through the higher waves and works much better when the current was ripping. Maybe because it had less surface area than the 12ft Cobra tandem I was using. The OK Scrambler XT worked well also, but did not try it when currents were ripping. May need the longer kayak for the storage capability and some bay fishing.

Frenzy redesigned in 07. You can tell the new model by the area behind the seat molded to fit a small cooler or crate. Originally molded to accommodate a scuba tank. The question came up, did they redesign the hull? From comments of unhappy folks that owned older models, the answer is yes. Frenzy is the surf machine. Ocean Kayak makes a bit pricey but good seat with adjustable side straps for optimal control. At 9', this kayak will fit in the back of your PU. Get a butch chain and run it through the scupper whole. It is not for long distance bay runs but is fine for short trips. It's a hoot in the surf. L

get a scrambler XT and you will never use another other than a Mal.2 in the surf, if you have any size. The Frenzy is O.K. but not the greatest. Scrambler XT is lonf enough to handle the rough surf coming( or going) which most people forget about.

I have the frenzy and a Hobie quest. I took the Quest out in the surf one day, big mistake, actually kinda scary. The frenzy in the surf is a hoot. I took the frenzy in the bay one day for a long paddle, big mistake, to slow and no rudder, tracking problems. It just depends on what you want to do. The frenzy and others in it size are lighter and easier to load. The Quest and the other longer sleeker boats are much, much easier to paddle in flat water and they have much more storage room. For the bay I love the Quest. I have taken the frenzy several miles offshore in the right conditions.

The Frenzy is great for the surf. It's shorter, giving you more control, so you can take on the waves and make it past the first gut. Shocked A friend of mine caught a 20# ling from his frenzy. I take my Speck out when the surf allows, being a 12 footer and all. Ocean makes great kayaks for the surf. Just like everyone says, it's a blast out there. Good luck, have fun, wear your PFD, because it's inevitable that you will take a swim at some point, which brings up another point. You might want to practice turning your yak over in the water and then turing it back over and getting back in while still in the water. If you can't do that, don't go out there. Just my two cents. Later, and good luck.

Malibu X-Factor or Cobra Fish-n-dive.

The X-factor is the longer yak and I prefer it when going through rough surf. I can fit more stuff (crate, ice chest) on my X-factor than on my fish-n-dive. But most of the stuff is behind me.

The Fish-n-dive has a little better layout for keeping stuff in front of you and above deck. When I know I'll need stuff out in front of me and available quickly (bag of cut bait for instance) the fish-n-dive works better.

Both are stable and great for offshore fishing.
