I feel it is all relative,if you pay to hunt you want to shoot the biggest buck you can, people that pay guides want to catch as many fish as they can. The person or person's taking the money will try to accomadate their customer. I fish from a Kayak and keep or release what suits me that day. Live bait or artificial (which I use) is a personal decision. Hopefully Gulp Shrimp with the 400x of something won't become debatable in time. Use your own judgement when you harvest from nature.

Well if there's a consistent "slaughter" going on that would indicate there's plenty of fish. I would worry now if you go down there and the "slaughter" is reducing it's size.

This year has been a banner year for big trout numbers in the upper laguna. The better guides have been hammering them for awhile. Living on the island, I fish two or three times a week, and I see what comes in to the docks. There have been some amazing boxes of fish brought to the table. Lots of illegal oversized fish and guides keeping their limits.

However, from experience I can tell you that using croakers does not guarantee fish. The average fisherman around here in the Corpus area doesn't catch much of anything. Creel surveys by TPW show an average of less than 1 keeper fish per hour per person.

As I only get down there to fish only once or twice a year to fish the bays I shouldn't be made to feel guilty for wanting to keep a limit of fish. This year was the first time in many years that I got to spend a whole week fishing. Between 5 of us fishing on and off for 7 days we kept 31 fish and released as many. Most of the released were under sized but some were not but if I wasn't there for a week I would have kept every legal one I could. In my lifetime I have probably kept less than 80 trout total which is less than many of you catch in a summer. Most years when I only get down for a short weekend I end up not keeping any fish as I don't catch enough to make a decent meal. Most of the "pure fishermen" that only use artificial probably kill more fish in a year than I could in ten years of using croakers. I agree that using artificials is a much more exciting way to catch fish and I was thrilled to catch 3 keeper trout this past week during the day that way but I will not let someone else guilt me away from bait just so you can have better fishing. In fact on the piers at night I only use artificial for the reasons many of you stated. Since the night pier fishing is almost exclusively undersize trout I use single hook lures and half of them shake off before we even get them up to the pier. Instead of limiting how many fish I can catch why doesn't TPW limit how many times you can go fishing. That would give the same or better result and there would be less boats for me to compete with when I'm down there my couple of times a year. I don't really think we should or could limit the number of fishing trips but if you honestly look at it you would see that it would be a much more effective way to protect the fishing that we all love. So if you are really sincere about protecting the trout population like you say you are then instead of suggesting self imposed bag limits I suggest you limit how many times you fish this year.

I just like everyone want to see a healthy fish population for generations to come. I was the happiest guy on the bay when my 12 yr old son reeled in a 27" trout last week and I want to be able to share that experience many times more over the years. I'm just not about to let someone that fishes 2 or 3 times a week make me feel bad for keeping my fish. I pay the same amount for my fishing license and I'm going to keep what I can eat and store plenty in the freezer to enjoy later and revive the memories I made with my son.

That's why I live here... To catch Speck's and Red's... And I'll fish when I want and "hopefully" where I want... I go by the laws of the land and catch a lot of fish because I worked all my life to get to this place in time..."Retired"... So I don't need anybody to tell me what to do... I had enough of that in 20+ years in the military... So you live San Antonio and fish once or twice a year if you want, that's your choice... And when you come down here take as many fish home as you can catch (within the law) and be Very Happy not gulity...

good points titeline, agree with ya on that one. Most locals are not "meat haulers" cuz we can go any day any time. And not in the guide buisiness either.

Coming down for the first time in two years in 2-1/2 more weeks. You can bet we will eat as much and take as much home as we can 'cuz it is likely to be another six to eighteen monthsf before we can do it again. I would STILL like a mess of eating size croaker, but haven't seen that in a long, long time. May have to go up around Lamar/Goose Island to hit them. If I have a negative impact on the fish populations doing that then I might as well stay home.

If I'm down in November I've got a gig in one hand and an aircraft landing light in the other and ankle deep down by the Big Tree.

Just got back from the Rio Frio, it's a little low, but I love floating in the river with my family. I was wondering how this thread played out this week, figured I'd get hammered on my views.
Justlemein, since you thought you had to respond personally to some of my points, lets look at what the thread header was.......what are people thinking about guides, limits, and such. The people I know and associate with almost to a person think something needs to be done because usually they have had bad experiences on the water and the ramp with guides. They are all people who live around here. The slaughter only occurs usually on good conditions like we've had lately. Most of the time guides catch a few more than the good locals, not always. Sorry it offends you, I hated to get in on this but this is an honest answer to what I am thinking, and the people around here that talk to me about it.
As far as what people who live out of town think about guides and limits and such, I guess this thread is letting me know that. That's why I read it, it makes me smarter............I got a whole lot of that I need, too.
I love to fish. I like people who fish. I'm gonna be doing it for a long time, I take people out a lot, but I will never guide. Everybody does what they have to do. Good fishing, people.
