So much for worries about letting the cat out of the bag. I'll post on Nick's and Tyler's websites to let holders of the pink petitions know to turn them in NLT 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 28, which is the last day we'll collect at the courthouse. The blue ones can continue to be accessed at signing places other than the courthouse for a while after Wednesday, keeping the issue in the public eye and preventing the City from sticking our version of the City Charter Amendment on the ballot before next April's scheduled City election. That last is to avoid the City having to spend a mint on a special election in November and falsely accusing the BAC of wasting the taxpayers' money in doing so. We're patient. Besides, we want those councilmembers up for re-election in April to explain why they voted for the beach closure and their own loophole-ridden version of the Charter Amendment. They should thank us for insuring they've got 9 months to think up excuses for their behavior, instead of only 5.

Beach Access Coalition: We have the signatures
By Denise Malan/Caller-Times
June 23, 2006

A petition allowing residents to vote on the City Council’s vehicle ban on 7,200 feet of Padre Island beach has enough signatures to put the issue on an April ballot, organizers said Friday.

The Beach Access Coalition will continue to collect signatures until next week, just to be sure, member Bill Kopecky said.

The petition needs about 7,000 voters’ signatures to put the issue on the ballot and has more than 8,000 so far, Kopecky said. The deadline to turn in the signatures to the city is July 12, and the coalition plans to turn it in June 30.
