Hello. I am new to the board and fairly new to saltwater fishing. My wife's dad lives there in corpus and we come there yearly for about 3-5 days. I am about to come down there for about a month straight to do some work on the side (i teach and coach during the school year) and fish. Like I said I am new to saltwater fishing so my knowledge is limited. I will be doing most of my fishing on the Packery Jetties and on BHP. This time of year would you guys recommend lemon rigs as well as popping corks? Also, is there an effective way of fishing on the bottom around the jetties or is that just asking for lost tackle? I know of a couple spots where I can net perch, mullet, and shrimp so bait usually isnt a problem.

Any help / advice / concerns are welcome.

welcome to the board hope you have a great time during your stay. Hopefully some of the jetty fisherman will chime in and give you the low down. Titeline is always killing them on lemon rigs out there, I fish both cork and bottom out there, when i fish out there. Anyway, welcome.

Like you, I am still pretty new to fishing. This board has been around for quite some time so my best friend has quickly become the "search" feature. Trust me, just about everything has been talked about on here.

Although im no pro at fishing the jetties ive caught my share of fish. Packeries have been getting hot lately when the waters nice. The lemon rig does work awesome and is perfect for fishing whatever dept you want...for the jetties depending on where you are fishing you want to be atleast 6ft. I prefer 6-10ft. Last time out we caught some nice ones by the bridge. There we only needed about 3-4ft popping cork rig as we were fishing a drop off. Ill share the spot if your interested. Might be better to explain it over the phone. last time out we managed 5 trout between 15-21 and a 31 in red. Ive got some nice flounder there too. Good luck, where ever you go. The waters been alittle too dirty still for BHP, once it clears the trout action will be very good there at night.

Welcome joho5. Expect to find a wealth of information here. Sounds like you'll have fun. And you have one thing working in your favor already - the ability to catch a variety of live bait.

I think another way to say what FINS said is that if fishing from a jetty, you should try to fish deeper than a store-bought trout rig leader, but not ON the bottom. And under a cork, so that your bait is suspended off the bottom and the submerged rocks. I haven't seen a lemon rig, so I'll let someone else describe that. If you're going to be on the coast for a month, and if your daily schedule allows, I'd recommend going out at least 30 days of whatever month it is. This time of year you'll normally be rewarded for getting on your fishing spot in the pre dawn.

Be careful out there on the jetties. Those rocks can be deceivingly slippery and sharp at the same time.

We fish the bhp 2-3 times a week. fishing has been hot saw a 5 ft. tarpon
yesterday . We got 4 reds and 1 trout all on the bottom used piggy, and mullet, there were several limits caught . when you get down here look us
up on the pier will be glad to help

as i said earlier, the regulars would chime in with good advice. one other thing, stop by the "bait bucket", on service road east bound between walton and the causway. they have lemon rigs and a ton of info to customers.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I am leaving to come there on Friday and just got back from WalMart picking up 3 way swivels, a couple of plastic lemon containers and all the little odds and ins to get ready.

question for the jetties. how far out do you fish from them and i guess depending on the day is whether you fish on the surf side vs the channel side? I mean do I need to throw it a good ways out from the rocks so I dont get caught, or does it drop pretty quickly>

also on talking about the bridge, are you talking about just that bridge that crosses the road heading to Port A? Ive always seen folks fishing down there, but never stopped.

once again I am very appreciative of all the responses. I have been on boards before where newbies arent very well welcomed.

Fish the channel side on a incoming tide. Throw up current as far as you can, will drift inwards anyway, Rig 6-7ft depth& reel in quick when close to the edge. 8-10ft rod helps, but can be done on a 6-7ft.
never had any luck at the bridge, but I always hit the rocks is why.
