we never got to the coast very often, but I bet Capt Mike remembers when the men would get beer(returnable bottles) orange, grape, Dr Pepper and Cokes for the kids(also returnable bottles) and put all this into a metal ice chests and then dump fresh crushed ice all over them.
they'd build mesquite fires and BBQ while our moms made potao salad and drank gin and rum.
all the dads wore short-brim straw hats and all the moms had on pedal-pusher slacks and sleeveless blouses.
us kids were mostly nekkid except for little shorts.
good days.

I remember those days, boys I knew wore boat shoes, PF Flyers, Hush puppies, Converse allstars, or those black track shoes with the skinny soles and white stripes if you thought you were speedy! My mom would get her hair done once a week in a beehive too! Pedal pushers and sleeveless blouses.
You could make your own soft drinks with those Fizzy tablets too. It went down good while playing with Super Stuff. Cool

And who can forget riding in the bench seat that looked backwards in the family station wagon.

Tyler you are so right my mom did wear pedal pushers with the sleeveless
blouse, my folks drank Falstaff and Shlitz beer, suds they called it. Growing up in Harlingen we would go to south Padre through Los Fresnos, and on to Laguna Vista. Sometimes they would take the back way through Rio Hondo, and through Bayview. I remember potted meat sandwiches, or egg salad. Shasta sodas 10 for a dollar, bare feet and very hot sand running fast as a sandcrab to the water.

What a great walk down memory lane! I grew up in Kville and we would fish the ICW. Dad had a 18hp Evinrude and we would rent a boat from Ace Kimbrel at the Red Dot Bait Stand. Those old swing bridges were scary to a young kid...especially when a big mud truck or 18 wheeler would stop the traffic and drive down the middle of the bridge/barge. There was a guy that had a old ratty house boat on the other side of the road from the Red Dot. I think his name was Art Mostello or something like that. Dad knew him and called his houseboat Art's Ark..lol. One cold winter night we went over to his houseboat and he fixed us the best bowl of oyster stew I've ever eaten. We would fish the drum run and I can remember hundreds of drum fish heads on the spoil banks just north of the bridge. We would always finish the trip by stopping by the Dairy Queen at the 'Bluff. It was across the street from that tackle store that had all of the big bamboo rods out in the front. There was also a mean parrot at that place. At one time....the causeway had a toll booth right at the same area.....Great memories! Any of you guys that went through high school in the Bluff in the 80's remember a Mr. Zepeda or Mr. Burks??

It was the one published after the Big Shell Cleanup. My mother showed t to me last week.

Tyler

I need to pick up a copy.
Where you asked permission for a re-print?

No but that's okay the publisher has way more problems than I need to add to and he is a good egg.

I remember fresh bait shrimp was 49 cents a pound in the mid 60's. Heck, if the fishing was lousy we would take the bait home and cook it up! Speaking of eatin', anybody remember the "Shep's Chicken Shack's"? Man, they made some good fried chicken!!!!!! The first time in my life that I ever hooked anything that never slowed down was in Packery pass on an outgoing tide with a gold Johnson Sprite spoon. Man, that sucker took off for Cuba! I was afraid of getting spooled so like the young and dumb person that I was I put my thumb on the spool and applied just a tad more pressure. CRACK!!!
