Just an outside question here.....
Have any of you ever taken the Wharf or Scat Cat at Port A? Their rates don't look that bad. I was just thinking about something different for a day.
I know that you will be fishing with a bunch of strangers, but can it be fun?
Are there better months than others?
Any suggestions? |

for the slow season right now im pretty sure they are running just the scat cat on 9hr and 12hr bottom fishing trips. Right now you cannot keep any red snapper caught but you will fish for them on top of fishing for AJ, grouper, beelines, lanes, kingfish, and sometimes a stray dolphin or two.
The boats are 80' long catamarans and cruise at about 13knots, usually a 2-3hr run out there give or take a few minutes. This time of year if you get really lucky you might run into some blackfin or even yelllowfin tuna at these bottom fishing spots. for these trips its really what you make of it, the crowds are lighter this time of year so if you dont care about keeping your 2 17'' red snapper id say go soon..
hope this helps

After moving here in '86, I made a number of the short trips on the Wharfcat. While for the most part enjoyable, a couple of trips were miserable. High seas, rude deckhands and drunk and disorderly fishermen were contributing factors to the misery. You also need to be patient with the novices amongst you, they often end up getting their lines tangled up with others. Don't sit on the stern on the trip out or in, you will be breathing diesel exhaust and it might make you feel ill. I made that mistake on my first trip...only time I tossed my cookies.
However....if the captain can put you on the fish, you will soon forget about all the bad things and enjoy the catching.
Here's a pic after my first trip. Contributing factor to the two fish snapper limit today. If I remember correctly, the winning fish for the big fish pool that day was a 23 pound sow.

And another factor are the commercials overfishing and breaking every law out there. And also the 'scientists' with the 'proof' that make these laws. |

Have been out several times before I bought my boat (2 1/2 yrs.). I always had a good time and caught plenty of fish. The only part I didn't like is that you only get to fish 4 of the 12 hours you are out.

| My trip this summer was more like 3-1/2 hours each way. Deck hands were very friendly and helpful, though. There was one very drunk and obnoxious couple, they must have stayed up all night drinking as they were drunk at 6:30 am. And the lady was trying to show everybody her "well-endowment!!" |
