http://cgi.ebay.com/ABU-ULTRAMAG-XLT3-CASTING-FISHING-REEL-FULLY-CONVERTED_W0QQitemZ7243734468QQcategoryZ11728QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I learned this pertinent information from one of the best continental catfishermen guide due to his wondering rambling posts...But when he's taking his clients out to fish the dam races for monster catfish:
Under the thread of "Surf Casting Reels" @
http://www.catfishin.net/TipsSection.html , he has typed:
"This reel is an ABU Ultramag III and they don't make these any longer. I think the last ones were made in 1989 and they are the premier distance casting reels. No other reel can out-perform them in competition casting. This one has been converted for competition casting and I used one similar to this one to cast 258 yards in my second competition that I attended. If you have one of these they're in pretty high demand ... much less demand since the Penn 525 Mag T was produced but I don't think the Penn can cast further than these reels still yet. They broke the mold. "
Breakaway freaks, among dissenters and limp-wristed lobbers, let me know your opinion!

Rudy,
Thank you for the advice. I'm not much into using bird-nesting reels, but have a few of them....I simply posted this thread for others who may hold a fondness, or likeness, to these once "grand" surf legends of reels.....
For example, I've seen many on this board, as well as many others, extolling the greatness of Fenwick rods.....but now, in the face of the new technology, they are considered "old and heavy" compared to the newer Breakaway and Break-your-bank rods! |

I have quite a collection myself, the old stuff is great but new tech sure beats a lot of it. |

Exaclty my point......Personally, I favor the 15-30 lb abu rods for salmon fishing back in the 1980s ..but they are no longer made...They are the best drum rods of all time, in my book.....and for me to help others with "old school technology" I don't mind in the slightest......
Granted, I have no kickback on this reel, nor any investment in it.... |

Big John,
The catfisherman wasn't selling the reel, by the way.....
I had been reading his site for the past few days prior to that post and decided to search ebay for the reel....Now, I'm ignorant on most birdnesting reels......So I thank you for the heads up...
I am a registered Ebay member and can find out the buyer -- that is, if the reel sold...I find it my duty to warn the "sucker" he got a fluke of a reel....thank you for the help!
I'm no expert, and most of those on the Breakaway, if I had cross-posted this thread, could have gotten to me and the buyer sooner.... As I've said...I had good intentions (Then again, so did the nun helping the boy crossing the street on a flooded highway and the 12 year old boy who was crushed to death....It doesn't change the outcome!...She's guilty!) |

Hi crab_n_fisher
I wouldn't get excited about buying that reel as it's only available to Great Britain buyers. it's not a great fishing reel but will cast further than most any other reel. It has been converted and the only thing that it's lacking from a visual standpoint is the extended knob that would allow a person to back the magnets off after the initial cast to maximize distance. My information on that deal you read was written a long time ago and I'm not even sure as to what it says now but it's not important as I'm guessing you're thinking about using this reel for fishing which would be a bad idea. think of it as a ferrari compared to a good pickup ... the ferrari will go fast but the pickup will haul ya too an from the fishing hole and all your gear ... you don't want to take a ferrari down the beach at P.I.N.S. so get a fishing reel ... the most common and a good choice for drum and redfishing down in corpus would be the abu 6500 c3ct ... if you're getting into competition casting get an ultramag III or a penn 525 mag T. that information I had on that page was about competition casting and not for fishing.
I used abu 7000 c3's for fishing reels when using baitcasters. still would be if I didn't have a boat.
Hey Dalyn! long time no see ... I don't think that's an xlt either ... the xlt had the cam'd side plate I think. where you push the button and then twist the inner side plate to get it off and expose the spool ... there are different models and I sold about 4 or so xlt side plates to big dave from boston along with all the spare parts I'd purchased for those reels.
this is an XLT side plated reel
