We had a good hunt Saturday outside of Stuttgart. Sunday two greenheads and a woodduck drake.
How did it go this weekend here? I saw a big bunch some somethings (looked like teal) working over packery flats this AM. |

I bet you were surprised. That will make a sick mount I bet. Looking forward to the pics.
Drake, I forgot to say congrats on the hunt up north - I hear Stuttgart is like the Duck Capitol. Wish we had a Macks Prairie Wings down here. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

| I'm real new to duck hunting (read: this is my first season) so i am pretty proud of my one redhead i got. Borrowed some friends decoys, but none of the birds would fly in close enough so i gave up on them. Not sure why, may be the spread or that i get too excited to not watch them as they get near. Oh well. Decided to sneak up on some ducks in the middle of the bay. Luckily they were upwind, flushed came around and i got my duck. |

Wind direction could play a part! Definetly camo and being still is a must !Be patient and they will commit and get close. Fresh water or Saltwater ? _________________

Trust me, I know it's hard to stay still. I am as fidgety as they get. It's silly how close they will come if you can stay still though. Troutsacker has good points. The numbers in your spread can make a differnce, as can wind. You have to be able to recognize it when they flare. Were you moving? If not, then it could be your spread or your calling, so be willing to make some changes. They want to land into the wind, so keep that in mind when leaving a pocket for them to land in. If you are at a spot that allows you to put the spread pocket coming across (instead fo directly into you), then take advantage of it. This will have their focus on the decoys and they wont be able to see you sitting right behind them. Hope that helps. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

I remember when Macks was still in the old hardware store and the wings over the prarie gumbo cook off was in their parking lot. They moved out towards the Little Rock higway then sold to a group of lawers in Little Rock. Like everything else it changed and aint the same.
JP3 - check out some of the layout blinds in cabela's etc. stay very very still had as hard as it is to do do not look up divrectly at them. Your forehead and eyes shine just like mirrors. YOur gun barrel does the same thing. |

Drake,
I have some good friends I hunt with that grew up in Stuttgart/Brinkley and have told me the same about Macks and the RNT shop. They're a really good bunch of folks. Still trying to get them to take me on a flooded timber hunt!
The Cabelas layout blinds rock.
Shot a tree full of teal last week...this week will hopefully bring some big ducks!

Thanks for the advice!
I was wearing a face mask, same one i've used for turkey hunting, but the eyes shining makes a lot of sense. I had about 2 dozen mallard decoys just spread randomly in a little inlet on the ICW with the wind at my back. one duck, a Pintail, was coming straight in towards me and the decoys and started to flare, but he was a long way out when he changed his mind and took off. I wasn't calling because I know I'm not good enough at it to fool them in close. I thought I was pretty well camoed and still, but i guess those things are relative.
Again thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it works! |

It could be the fact that you were using mallard dek's. My neighobors all swear they do not work here.
I have a garage full of G&H mallards and went and bought coastal duck decoys..... then again all I need is a quasi good reason to pull out the cabelas master catalog.
Artifical88 - the RNT single I have was one of the last ones made by Butch before he turned the shop over. When he gave it to me I told him I was not going to use it but save it as a trophy. He told me to give it back or use it.
And for the record the huting here is just as good at home. Different type of hunting but still as good. Fewer people in a space about 10x the size. I have a lot to learn and frankly that has been pretty exciting. |

The mallard decoys will work, my buddy has about two dozen repainted like redheads and they work just fine. _________________ still chasing my 30" trout |

The key on those mallards working though is that they are painted like redheads - redheads are fairly dumb. _________________ Save the seagrass......Shoot some ducks |

have to agree with you there. I always get a little excited when we are putting them out and a few try to land in the decoys with us. _________________ still chasing my 30" trout |
