I have to make a poll for my speech class and ask 20 or more people around my High School to fill it out. I decided to make the questions on there about the beach closeures so I can see if anyone else my age knows whats going on.
Does anyone have any ideas on what questions to put on the poll it is supposed to be 10 questions?
Any help appreciated |

Rooster,
I believe that you should start out with a simple question like: Do you believe the Corpus Christi city council should violate TOBA and illegally close the beach for a private resort? Well maybe that would be to much of a leading question, maybe you could ask: How many of the city council members do you think are on the payroll of the resort developers? No it would be to easy to answer that. How about: If the city council promises to only close a small portion of the beach will they keep their word. No, don't ask that the city council already answered that question. D**n I know why you asked for help this is gonna be tough!!
Okay, okay how about:..... Is privatizing the beach worth a few minimum wage jobs? *&^%$@*)_&!!! Where's the tar and feathers? |

How about:
Were you aware that the park that was originally going to replace JP Luby on the south side of the new channel will be privatized if the city councel closes the beach there?
Did you know the surf pier was torn down?
Would you want to drive all the way to the island for a minimum wage job in the summer at the resorts they want to build?
Did you know the city is planning to close all the beaches between Jp Luby and Port Aransas to traffic eventually?
Do you think as many Spring Breakers will come to Corpus if they cannot drive on the beach, but must park and walk?
Have you ever hit by a car on t he beach when you were young? (This just pokes fun at the lie that the closures are for safety) _________________ GOBZA!!!

Man it is amazing how easy it is to get the old blood pressure back under 200 when you double up on the valium! Okay, where was I... Oh right, the next question should be if they know what the definition of a barrier island is. In other words do they understand that it is the place where hurricanes come ashore. (Say this slowly in case they don't understand what you are asking.)
Next I would ask: Do you think the government should help rebuild the resort when (not if) a hurricane destroys it? If they answer yes, then part b) of that question would be did you pay any income tax last year? The questioning would split depending upon how they answered the previous two questions: If they want the government to rebuild and did not pay taxes ask: When do you intend to get a job to pay for this? If they want the government to to rebuild and did pay taxes, ask them to give you some money. Never know these people are free enough with money it might work. If they do not want the government to subsidize a jackass private venture on a barrier island, they understand what is going on and no further questioning is needed.
I don't guess we have ten questions yet, so what else can we ask??? How about: Do you believe the local paper is an unbiased source of information on this subject or a mouthpiece for the developer? Another good question is do you believe the beaches of Texas belong to all of the citizens of the state? In other words does the city own rights to the beach or are they entrusted with stewardship for the whole state? If they are stewards then privatizing the beach will deny usable access to the poor and disabled.
Looks like I came up with some decent questions after calming back down. I didn't even get sidetracked and start blasting the idiots that want to sell our beach to some money grubbing bum who could care less about this city! I am so proud of myself for that. I wanted so bad to say what I beep well think about the beeps that run this beep beep city and do not give a beep about the honest hard working people that like to relax and fish on the beach. |

1. Do you like to drive on the beach?
2. Would you like to see the city close the beach to driving.
3. Would you like to carry all your fishing or picnicing stuff 1/4 mile to the beach?
4. If you did carry all you stuff to the beach how many trips would it take to get everything to where you want to fish or picnic?
5. Should the City Council close public beachs just because a person says they will build a world class resort here but only if you close the beach to driving?
6. Do you know What the Texas Open Beaches Act (TOBA) is for?
7. How many times a year do you go to the beach?
8. How would you feel if your children could not go to the beach or even see the beach because of all the condos and resorts?
9. The people voted to have Packery Channel opened and to have park and walk ways on both sides of the channel with maybe a few concession stands. Do you think it is right for the City Council to violate the vote and give the south side of Packery Channel to a private contractor so the public wont be able to use it like they voted too?
10. If the City Council closes off 1.4 miles of beach to vehicular traffic, how far would you be willing to carry your coolers and tackle and beach chairs and everything else that you think you would need for a good day at the beach?
11. If you had to go through all that work to get to the beach
(a) would you go to the beach more often?
(b) would you go to the beach less often?
(c) would you quit going to the beach? _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it. |

Rooster,
Another question would be: Do you believe regulating vehicle traffic is an effective means to maintain safety on the beach? Obviously we use laws, signage, etc on the highway system. This could possibly be a two part question or two questions to find out what the person believes will make the beach safe. This also would go with the questions I PMed you about the level of expertise and their position on the issue. |
