Conditions just before daylight were interesting, but I wasn't about to turn around and call off a fishing trip. At the launch rain was coming down and winds were blowing. I guessed 20mph… but the weather station reported gusts to 40 and I won't argue. As soon as the lightning had gone past I launched in the pelting rains and headed to some back lakes. On the way I caught a pair of trout (one was legal) and then I got busy looking for reds in the whitecaps. Areas with only six inches of water were streaked with foam, but eventually I spotted a red feeding. A gull was hovering a foot above the water and not moving - I knew what that meant. It took a couple of tries in the wind, but I got the fish's attention and landed red number one. Farther down the shore I found another pair feeding under a gull, and I got one of those to eat too. Then way at the back of the lake I found a small group feeding in open water and one of those grabbed the bait too. I had my limit, but now the wind began to come down and reds began to materialize everywhere. Gulls were hovering over many of them and I chased a bunch, hooking seven more fish before I was ready to head back to the truck. Three of the fish broke off near the kayak - two got into the rudder and one dragged the line across the bottom of the kayak. Some of the recent oyster rash on the hull will need to be smoothed out to avoid more break-offs in the future. That 12lb Tasline braid is great stuff, but it can only survive so much abuse. Overall it was a very nice morning and I got another 10.5 miles of paddling on the books.

Nice, Glenn. You’re a lot madder at those reds than I am |
