My usual approach to redfish isn't what I consider fishing. It's more akin to hunting by spot and stalk ...until a strong cold front blows through and "hunting" fish isn't an option. I love wading in strong cold fronts where the temps plunge, and whether day or night I tend to go in search of fish when I can arrange it. Thursday after work the winds were whipping 20+ and temps were frigid by South Texas standards, so I paddled out to the edge of a channel and worked the edges with a pumpkinseed jerk bait. By hopping the bait off the bottom several trout were quick to cooperate. As soon as it got dark the trout stopped playing, so I switched to a morning glory DOA paddle tail (to have a more visible target in the dark) and caught redfish. By 9pm I had released over a dozen fish and had a few to take home.
Friday afternoon it was a different channel, but by wading the edges the action was consistent again. Some schools of reds were small, but plenty were within the slot, and the action was consistent until dark, when the bite shut down.
Early Saturday it was frosty and I returned in the dark and managed a limit of redfish before the sun broke over the horizon. As I worked a channel edge , I found a spot that seemed to hold more fish than other stretches, so I held there and enjoyed a nice workout. After releasing many fish (at least 20 of the reds were upper slot and longer), I was ready to head home for a shower and some family activity. The reds that rode on the stringer that morning were 27, 27.75 and 28.
This cold front gave me three opportunities to fish, and the results were phenomenal. Ninety seven reds and twenty nine trout came and went, and I don't feel the need to fish for a few days, lol. |

I'm confused, you wade in the winter and fish from a kayak in the summer? |

Yep, I do whatever is needed to be successful on the water. In Summer fish are shallow and I need to stay in the kayak, but when it gets cold and the fish go deep, it's easier to get out and wade the shoreline. The cold just helps ensure it's not crowded, and with the right layers I stay surprisingly comfortable. |

| You are truly a real fisherman. I've fished the surf in the winter when it was blowing and 40 degrees (or less). Set the lines, get back in the truck and wait for a drum or whiting to hit. Very satisfying to take home a nice catch and there was usually nobody else on the beach. Stopped off at Whataburger for hot coffee just to get warmed inside. Sounds so good I might just go soon. |
