We "The State" are locked in an EPIC Cage Match Battle with the Fed's Science Center in Miami, and the dispute boils down to 'how we report our rec landings, vs. how they calculate our rec landings'. They think that we WAY overshot the State allocation before, and now the penalty phase has to kick in. It's all rooted in the 2019 overage and the 2020 lawsuit, but that's farther down in the minutia than most folks care about.

The Bottom Line (According to Stone Cold Steve Austin) - 12:01 am Monday, 11/15 - You don't have to go home, But you can't stay here!!! Cool

This stuff really pisses me off.

Recreational fishermen have the LEAST impact on red snapper compared to all the other entities harvesting or killing them and we're the ones that get punished.

the east wants our western snapper stocks so bad that they can literally taste them...

really sucks getting punished for having healthy fish stocks...

move the GC headquarters to Houston....right next door to CCA....

Texas A&M Corpus Christi and the Harte Institute did a study they termed "The Great Snapper Count" that was done with lots of real science and data, and they concluded that the gulf has a lot more snapper than the Feds want to admit.

On the other hand, it can be really difficult to find quality snapper inside state waters because they get hit pretty hard every weekend.

I'm sure you and I have covered this in the past, but what are the repercussions if we succeed from the Feds? what do we lose?

I'm not going to make any friends with this, but you couldn't be any more wrong.

The commercial harvest is regulated down to the fish, and an individual fish can be tracked from the boat, to the dealer, to the market. When was the last time the commercial sector overshot it's quota?

The IFQ program is under a similar amount of scrutiny, and even if you don't believe in a public resource being played out to the highest bidder, they always maintain their quota.

Shrimping activities clearly have an impact on the smallest snappers, but again, it's accounted for in the stock assessment.

The same cannot be said for the rec side. There is a reason why rec harvest #'s are estimated, as opposed to the actual poundage coming from other sectors. With private docks being off-limits to samplers (either State level or Fed level), and not every point of entry covered everyday, an estimate is what we have to work with. And despite that, years after year, the rec side blows past their quota.

So the next time you wave off the dockside sampler when they want to survey your catch (it is totally voluntary), you have only yourself to blame for these fuzzy numbers used by the Feds.

That's not even part of the equation! Shocked But, if I had to guess what the Feds would eventually pull if any State decided to give them the middle finger, It would likely involve $$$'s. Revoking Dingell-Johnson Act funds would be a pretty hard hit to State level conservation efforts.

Question Question

that's a sticky wicket for sure....maybe we should think about paying some of that grant money to businesses that are affected by the closure? buy our way out of the situation?

and in the bigger picture, according to DOI, texas doesn't have a perfect track record in managing those funds either....so maybe we quietly take this lump for a month and a half and then just move on?

here's a rabbit hole for anyone that's bored...

this is 100% true, and anyone that catches a red snapper needs to sign up immediately for ISnapper and actually use it please thank you

I think we should tell Miami that they can have all the quota in FL that they can wrestle from the launchas

I think Stunz made that joke at Council once; lets ask the launchas if we can have some of our quota back....at least a lot of people laughed, but its' true...
