How do you get the private companies that run the power plants to winterize? Hmmmm.... I know, we will have the state pay for them so they can charge more for the power (plus a little bit more to send in the loop to campaigns).
So the state government pays them to winterize, the companies charge more for power, and the politicians get contributions to their PAC's, campaigns, etc.
All at taxpayer expense.
I love dis country!

P.S. How many insurance companies and banks are going to sue ERCOT when thousands of homes are foreclosed and condemned due to expensive water damage repairs that exceed the value of the home?

Sir, if swearing is a sign of intelligence, that makes me as dumb as a fence post. In addition, I am not certain what your service in the navy has to do with posting a woman using her middle finger. Personally, I do not much appreciation for such adolescent behavior. By the way you are incorrect, the 83 freeze was both longer in duration and intensity than the freeze of the prior week.

Interesting article on power failure. Looks like the wind turbines freezing up caused power loss, NG was actually increased significantly but could not keep up with the power loss and tremendous increase in demand. Looks like "green" energy was really the culprit after all.

Interesting read. I was not aware Tyler Durden quit Fight Club to write blogs on energy.

The wind figures are higher then I understood them to be, but that's great. Seems like both wind and natural gas needed winterization protections, and its cool to see how gas can be ramped up quick to cover as the winds die down each night. Coal can't do that.

It says that Texas couldn't buy enough out-of-state electricity; its my understanding that ERCOT is not even stet up to import energy (to avoid regulation by not trading energy with other states).

In fact, the next day after the snow the sun was out, the temp was over 45, and the snow was melting like crazy. As for your comment on the severity and length of the 83 storm below is a quote from the Galveston news paper in Decemeber 1983.

"Saltwater froze; on Trinity Bay, a sheet of ice 4 inches thick extended almost 500 yards from shore."

There are NO such reports from Trinity Bay as a result of this cold episode. In addition, Houston recorded 11 consecutive days of temperatures dipping below 32 degrees. Again that did not happen in this event.
