My son found this out at the beach along with an octopus. This is about 8 inches long. I don't recognize it.

scrawled cowfish....actually have seen a few washed up....

there's all kinds of fish swimming around out there in our bays that we never see, because they don't eat tequila chicken lures....we only see them during a freeze or red menace...

Dr. McKee has a book out there of fishes of the laguna madre, plus there's the REEF set by Humann, and then good old Hoese and Moore, fishes of the gulf of mexico....if anyone was looking for a source

I saw some of those at Packery yesterday, along with a BUNCH of puffers. Over in lake Padre, saw lots of dead fish, with some schooled up survivors as well.
