Covida Loca Part II - Texas Surf/Shark Ultra Megatron Report

Well it has been a painfully impatient summer as the powers that be closed down our beaches off an on throughout the season. We are living in some tough, unexplored times in human health. While this worldwide virus seemingly does not affect the vast majority of people, with others it is outright deadly. Despite most people not agreeing with the beach closures which are essentially being decided by one main individual, in the end it is what it is. I've been doing some trips on the upper coast but things have just been brutal and frustrating down here. Hurricane Hanna came through and to my expectations re-structured the beach for the better redistributing dune sand back on the beach to widen it. Surprisingly, with a slow moving Cat 2 landfall on the southern end of PINS, there were no major cuts through the island. And the turtle shack remains... riddle me that.

Now for the fishing - when the beach has been open, there have been an array of varying conditions. Starting in July the cold-water upwellings have been severe as they usually are when we get both measurable rain AND a strong consistent south wind. Usually this results in the water often being dirty and cold. I remember waking up on some of the July mornings with thick sea fog due to the cold water temps. Because of this, the general bite was slow on the beach. Sharks were slow. However, there was your typical cold-water anomaly of rare Dusky sharks hitting the beach. In addition, this was the first time I've got into large mature sandbar sharks in July from the beach. When the winds lay for a few days, the water warms and clears and brings in the typical big summer sharks. But anytime that wind blows hard out of the south well into the summer for an extended time, usually the water cools.

The last adventure I did was right before this last beach closure, which was within 48 hours after shrimp season started. I ended up landing and releasing a large 12' 2" male tiger shark... solo. You will be able to read about this incredible experience in my September article in the Texas Saltwater Fishing Magazine which should be hitting newsstands with a couple weeks.

Prior to this and some of the cold water events, we were hammering (no pun intended) several solid hammers on charters up to 12 foot. In all we did good on successfully releasing hammers this year. We have also been getting decent bulls up to 8 foot, but no monsters which we should be seeing right now. I feel with this current beach closure we lost out on a lot of tigers, big bulls, and hammers. If the beach reopens soon, we will still have a short shot at them. If we get too close to September, then the anchovies will start migrating and bring in a copious amount of blacktips and medium bulls which will destroy big baits before the bigger sharks have a chance to find them.

Overall, I'm done quarantining and want my beach access back. When we are allowed back, it should be quite interesting! Right now I'm taking charter reservations for mid-Oct through December for the fall chaos which will ensue. For pure action, the fall is my favorite time of the year. Time to get in on an adventure for yourself or your family! Contact me via message or check out

All sharks were caught on Catch Sharks Leaders and gear. The Incognito and Hammer-time leaders with Tru-Sand hooks have been crushing it! The big tiger came on a Triton26 hook and the hammers were either on the Hammertime 20/0s or Sandman 24/0s. Reds, small sharks, and rays have been hitting the Jack Slammers and Drum Masters.

Here are a plethora of photos (mostly of charters) of just some of the fish from the covida loca (Part II) time period... Enjoy!
