|

I posted this a month back and was asked to post closer to my arrival. We will be on North Padre on the 4th-11th. Even before COVID I didnt like to be around to many people, so we are planning on heading down PINs for most of our sand time instead of Mustang/Fish pass area.
I have been looking at tide charts and know full moon is Sat/Sunday and forecast of 1.8 tides with it falling .1 each day through the week.
The winds change from S on Sunday to SSE @13-15 mph M-W I know forecast sucks but its all I have to go off of.
What realistically can I expect from the tides. Do you think they will be to the dunes.
I will be driving an AWD subaru with brand new tires and sister in Jeep Cherokee with new tires as well. Given normal conditions is 10-12 miles down Pins reasonable expectation.
Again I am trying to learn more on them but since I only get down once a year I am a bit ignorant.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Erik |

Set up a pot of coffee, and use the Search function on the site here and put in : Harmonic
You will learn a semester or two ++ worth of information on how tides are forecasted, and what causes the 'water to the dunes' situations.
Cliff Notes version, ignore any tide table published in a magazine that that was physically printed months ago. (The same can be said for many of the tide charts that are in the Interwebs - they all rely on Harmonic Tidal Analysis).
But, to your question, with it being way closer to the date you want to go, I can tell you that the storm surge from Cristobal packed the beach well, the rains of the past week or so only helped in that, and the highs and lows for the tides should be well within normal ranges. Even with the really strong SE winds of the past few days, its pretty normal out there. But, the surf is rough, the green water is still well past the 4th bar, and fresh sargassum is the biggest concern. The algae in the guts that was really bad for weeks seems to have gone.
Haven't personally been past the 15 on PINS this year, but the time I spend south of Bob Hall to edge of PINS, driving has been an 8 or 9 on a scale of 10 for some time.
Hope this helps, and good luck on your trip. |

I'll save you the hassle of a wasted trip. Hope you gained some insight on 'tides'.
Our completely incompetent, brain-dead skifooza of a County Judge, KAREN, has decided to completely close off all beach access for vehicle traffic from this Friday to Tuesday of next week. She openly admits that the 'BEACHES' are governed by the TX Constitution, and she doesn't have the Authority to 'Close Them', but the Access Roads are run by the County and she can close those off. So, unless you want to park on the beach road St. Highway and walk onto the beach, ain't nobody going out there for the 4th!
That includes Nueces Co. Kleberg Co, ALL of PINS, and the beaches from Mansfield south to S. Padre Island. Not sure how KAREN managed to pull that off, with 3/4 of that area being outside her Jurisdiction, but there you go.
I hope each and every one here on this Board remembers these stupid beach closure decision by kAREN when it comes time for re-election. I know I'm going to do everything in my power to get this .................... [radio edit]......... Out Of Office! |

No, you won't.
CS's post is all true. TPWD determined the fate of Mustang Island SP, and NPS determined the fate of PINS. They all went 'Karen', but we are seeing enormous spikes so tourists right now won't help things - not to call you a 'tourist' specifically. _________________ All things will pass. Yeah I have been following. Still coming down as Condo is paid for and beats the hell out of staying home and working. I am on a canal so bringing my green LEDs and batteries to sit on the back deck and fish Sunday and Monday. I mean lets face it I can drink beer and fish off the deck.
I know a few areas I can go and wade bay side. I am bringing my wife, daughter, sister and her friend down as well so they may not want to walk in as much.
I will hit beach if it is open at 6AM Tuesday and hope for the best.
Thank you everyone for the updates and replies. |

You got a plan. That makes you 90% more likely to catch a fish, and not Corona. (Unless you're drinking it, LOL.) Please enjoy your stay. Don't let stupidity ruin it for you. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

In general it is probably not a bad idea close some beaches this weekend given the circumstances and my own personal bafflement at wanting to spend time on a crowded beach.
Nevertheless, "Karen" should have left that up to the responsible parties who have a better idea on how to "police" their areas and manage anticipated crowds.
Unfortunately, Covid or no Covid, this state has 30 Million people living in it and they want their beach time. I can well remember back in the 70's and 80's that even on a July 4th weekend the beaches were no where near as crowded as they are now on just a regular summer weekend.
PINS has always been a welcome break from the crowds past the 4WD sign but. alas, that is changing too.
I like that 6 AM Tuesday plan. I think you will find that it will work out better for you than the original. Sometimes you gotta go with the flow. |

When local government folds to state government, they never get their power restored. When state government folds to federal government, they never get their power restored.
See a pattern? Yes, this is social engineering at its worst. And wort part is, it was happening since at least the 1950s - just within the U.S.
When, at any time in history, has a government entity been known to historically reduce itself and restore powers to its lesser entities - after 'promising' to do so just to protect its own interests? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha I'll wait for a good answer.
(Didn't mean to hijack this post. Still hope you can make the best of your vacation. I've got a friend that wants to visit in the latter part of July with his kiddos, and I can't even promise him the beaches will be re-opened by then, much less businesses closing voluntarily to protect themselves. I honestly have no clue what to tell him, but, "come at your own risk". He's at least hoping the motel will still have its pool open.) _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |
