My daughter caught it from her father-in-law who came home sick from Wuhan in early October and I got it from her.
So, yeah, it was here in October.

Van's Burgers in Mathis had a couple of employees test positive. And they were dutifully wearing masks too. Rolling Eyes

They closed back down.

The basic rule of thumb on masks generally:

1. Only full, two-way rated RESPIRATORS (not masks or ventilators) provide the best protection for others and the wearer. They are two-way filtration (in and more importantly out). They cost some serious cash, and if you can find an affordable one now, it probably is a knock-off and doesn't work anyway.

2. N95 masks (not ventilators) provide the best MASK protection for others around you-- but very little protection for you.

3. Fine-waeve cotton masks/ face scarves provide decent protection for others, almost none for you.

4. Regardless, ANYthing worn over your face is practically useless and extraordinarily high risk for everyone if you touch it with your hands and then touch ANYthing else (including you) after use without first washing/desanitizing your hands. In fact, it's probably the highest risk area on your entire person--you suck the bad stuff into the mask regardless of whether it gets inside of you, and you blow any bad stuff already in you onto the mask itself. And then if you touch it and then anything else afterwards, you are now typhoid Mary incarnate for ANYONE else...

5. Any ventilator (one way, inward-only filtration), even if it is N95, is BAD BAD BAD for everyone, even worse than wearing any face covering at all. It is essentially a cannon for what YOU breath out and is not filtered at all. Meaning if you are already infected, you are now a guided missile launcher of the virus wherever you mask points. These masks are generally for construction use only (protect you breathing in particulate matter, allow you to breathe out freely-- including anything that is already in your respiratory system, bad stuff included, but now in a concentrated, focused stream...think of it like a thumb over the water hose effect). Moreover, see number four above.

Bottom line: above all else, think of any face covering like your hands. They are an extension of your hands, only even more concentrated. Wash the mask and your hands as regularly as possible, or dispose of a mask AND wash your hands after each mask use.

Sounds like a lot of effort, but all of the feces that is out there right now about "mandatory mask wearing" being preventative assumes people actually know how to buy, make or, most importantly, know how to PROPERLY use them--even if said masks are the uber, super duper, rolls royce of respirators.

Bah. I give up. Stay as safe and as comfortable as possible. But most importantly, stay smart.

Quick! Somebody call Washington, because we have all of the answers right here in Corpus Christi. We can't fix roads, but we can fix this virus! Laughing

I'm putting up a second chain-link fence around my property, hoping to keep the mosquitoes out!!!

Almost Nearly as effective as a mask to a virus! [Having training in microbiology, and understanding the metric system and what a micron measurement is....... Rolling Eyes ]

O.K. this time for real, I'm not adding fuel to the fire!

Microns in Hg or Microns in O2? Laughing HVAC joke, sorry.

1 isn't even scratching the surface...catching on to the pattern. Notice, privately-owned HEB is reporting their cases by store...Wal-mart = crickets. Hmmm. Same store that after the last lunatic 'shooting rampage' elected to stop selling rifles, shotguns, BB guns, and all handgun ammo... Hmmm... Wink

I'm not here to argue with any of your opinions, but any kind of face covering is better than nothing, especially in close quarters. It's not about you - it's about the general public. Get over it and just play along. As I said in a similar post on this same board, we're wearing paper masks and distancing at 6 feet when sneeze drops can travel as far as 24 feet...yeah I get your argument (and agree with it), but something is better than nothing. Starting tomorrow, it's mandatory in all of Nueces County indoor public areas. Just wear the damn mask. Even a fishing mask (which is almost as thin as paper masks) will do. Show you mean well for everyone.

P.S. - If you happen to have access to N95 masks and are not a healthcare worker, PLEASE do not use them and donate them to medical workers. They are medical grade, and they are short on supplies. You can get the civilian equivalent, KN95, if you're that worried. And yes, the masks with filters are the best, if you can find any good ones now. But be willing to pay out the butt. Any covering will do, even if it doesn't do anything and just shows you have hope for everyone else.

What a trip reading these responses. Most are correct. Especially regarding mask. A tight fitting N95 filters inhalation 0.1 to 0.3 microns. Virus is .12. But exhaust. It blows right back out at 50%. Thats why a good filter only lasts 8 hours. Anyway, plan on sucking saltwater up my nose in the surf Saturday!

5,996 new cases in Texas today

exponential increases. No flattening the curve now...

Who will you take your medical advice from, a doctor who specializes in pulmonary diseases, or... well.

Good luck everyone! Wear ya mask.

The Texas Department of State Health Services updated their Covid 19 case and testing report current through yesterday (6/25). They provide everything on a county by county basis in spread sheet format showing week-by-week and even day-by-day statistics. The NUMBER of week/over/week TESTS (not cases) in Nueces County alone over the past seven days has increased by over 1600%... go figure (pun intended). Kinda cool website. dshs.texas.org.

[EDIT: that's ".gov" not ".org"]
