So, I have been coming down from Austin (Cedar Park) as often as possible for about 3 years now. Still have a lot to learn about surf fishing, but I have come along from my first trip down with a few bass rods and some frozen mullet from a convenience store. This site has been a big part of my education and for that I am thankful.
Drove down Thurs morning and hit the beach around 18 m (I think, days kinda blurred together). No real problems with sargassum , and the spider weighted rigs pretty much stayed where I put them. Fished live croaker on surf rods and dead shrimp first gut. Not much action, but I did land my first black tip, probably about 30" , so that was cool.
Friday morning went down again, around 20 mm. Caught some small whiting, a skipjack, and a nice 22" speck on a croaker. Also caught the biggest whiting i have ever seen. So much so that I didn't id it right away and let him go as I didn't want to kill him while I tried to figure it out. Realized after catching smaller ones what I had done. Oh well. He was probably 13-14" and FAT. Relative newbie mistake I guess.
Hit it one last time Sat morning at the 22.5 mark. Sargassum was a problem, but manageable. I think I lost a few fish due to the line being weighed down by it. Managed to bring in 2 more keeper specks, one jumping out of the water as I reeled it in behind a clump.
Caught some more whiting, then called it a weekend and headed home around noon.
Didn't catch a single catfish the whole weekend.
