|
|
| Last Friday evening about 7PM I was out fishing on the south jetty with my 10 year old son and a couple of his friends. The surf was rough and the wind was blowing. Looking off to the southeast I see a tiller powered 17 foot Carolina Skiff heading towards the beach on the south side of the jetties with two Pilgrims on board. The rear end of their boat was just about to get swamped each time they went through one of those breaking waves. Then they decided to turn around and head into the waves. The little boat would rear straight up with each breaking wave. Finally, the motor died and they got sideways in the waves. A big breaking wave picked the boat up and slapped it hard upside down into a trough. Being a Carolina Skiff the boat didn't sink, and made a good raft for the men to cling onto as it drifted towards the beach. They finally drifted to the beach near its corner with the jetties. A crowd of beer drinkers was there to greet them along with the fire dept. People do some stupid **it.... |

does any one know of a zodiac flipping in the channel about a month ago. i heard they lost 4-80 and 2-50 and all of there tackle. the guys name is Davey Wright from the bluff.
I have said it once and I'll say it again. someone is going to get killed there. i was out there two weeks ago and there had to be a 100 small bay boat going offshore. all it's going to take is the weather to turn bad while all of those small boats are out. we all know it can go from flat as a lake to 4-6' in minutes with the right norther are a freak storm to roll in. it's happened to me more time than i want to remember. |

Trying to make legislation or rules that protect people from themselves is a useless [and liberal] idea. Unfortunately for their families, there are those in humanity that seem driven to weed themselves out. Always has been that way and always will be. One of the most dangerous things that we all do everyday is get on the highway with these types, and worse! That's WAY more dangerous than going out in an 8' inflatable! _________________ Dave

I ran a 12 foot sport model for years till the glue gave out and it wasn't worth the fixing. took to pins several times used a 25 johnson to push it. we thought about going out aways but never did. we did launch it off our 35 ft californian while out at flower garden twice on smooth days but with a weather watch out on calm days we swamped it several times playing around
point being its hard to launch off beach with any kind of surf action and catch a wave wrong and you have a boat loaded saltwater. it floats in but your gear takes a beating. i use a kayak now much easier to handle in surf |

I have a 12.5 foot Zodiac with a 25 hp Honda. Just for running out baits, it may not be any more convenient than a kayak as it takes a while to inflate and set up the boat. I guess if you had it on a trailer or in the back of your truck (which you could do with an 8 footer) it would be much quicker but still probably not as easy as a kayak beacuase of having to mantain the engine and so forth.
Unless the motor dies which of course does happen, I don't think waves under 6 feet could flip a 12.5 foot boat as long as the driver keeps the bow aimed toward the waves. Be prepared for some rockin and rollin though...
I did get swamped once while trying to start the motor. Everything got a good dose of saltwater but once I got the engine started, the boat still cruised pretty quickly even though it was filled with water. |

Good idea to have a sea anchor or drift sock on board. In case ur motor dies tied off the bow it will keep your bow into the waves. _________________ -STAY THIRSTY MY FRIENDS!- |
