My buddy Tod organized a trip down PINS with three visiting Aussies to attempt catching kingfish on topwaters. We've all seen them fly skyward as they attack bait on the surface, and we wanted to create that with lures and get it on video. This was too cool, and will always be one of my favorite methods of catching kings going forward.

That is just too awesome. I get pumped when I get a trout hit a topwater nevertheless a king. That would be an awesome experience. Thanks for the video Glen

They will hit topwaters at the jetties as well. It really gets the blood pumping.

Some years ago on a trip with Capt Billy my dad hooked a king on a she dog in the wadegut not far from the Masnfield jetties. He was standing on the sand the whole entire time using a trout rod with the BG15 that Capt Billy provided. The king was shaking so much that it even shook Capt. Sandifer's dentures out along with his pocketknife and some of the lures in his hat. I will never forget the sight of my Uncle holding Capt Billy's teeth in his hands while Billy himslef was trying to weight the king on the boga grip...

That's a great story! The legend himself getting taken advantage of by a king playing nasty. I guess it happens to the best of us from time to time.

yeah it was a good time. My uncle probably saved him a decent amount of money since he scooped them up before the waves could get to them and wash them away. Even made it into the Texas saltwater fishing magazine. From the picture you cant really tell, but Capt Billy had no teeth. Very Happy

Yeppa! Sure was nice to see how high those kings were jumping out of the water.

Thanks again for the ride...

FANTASTIC video!!! I've never seen anybody work a lure with the big sweeping motion that guy was doing. Looked kind of like a exaggerated walking the dog?

I love watching fish hit on top. If you haven't ever done it go catch some yellowfin on top out at the floaters! When they hit it looks like somebody dropped a Volkswagen off the rig! Can't get out there in your yak but it's a lot of fun!!!

Evidently that technique is a gift from down under. I'm glad we got it on video, because kings love it. I do have a connection that might be willing to mothership the kayak out there for yellowfin. That would be epic!

OMG, I had a story with his teeth! LOL! Winter trout fishing on PINS and making our way back north. Billy asks me have you seen my teeth? I said "Well they were in your center console." He said "Tyler, I looked there I don't need to know where they WERE I need to know where they ARE!"
Eventually we doubled back to the last two holes we fished and the one I remembered that had a gray milk crate next to it. We got out and there next to his tire track from our previous stop was his uppers. LOL! I had a picture of it somewhere but Lord that was funny!

That's wild! I never saw it but Oz or the Prof. would be the ones to pull it off! I've caught a bunch of yellowfin but can't picture doing it in a yak! Tough tough fish!!!
