Hi yall. Been a good long while since I posted here. Probably because its been a good long while since Ive been able to seriously wet a line. In a couple of weeks, my family and some friends are going to be spending three nights down in South Padre, right near Port Isabel. I had a few questions, and please forgive me if they are kinda dumb. I used to live and breathe this stuff but life got in the way and Ive been out of the game for the longest time. Its so rare that I get down to the water and I really wanted to pick your brains and get some advice to try and maximize my success if possible.

1) I was going to wake up and fish the surf at sunrise every day. Planning to throw a gold spoon and maybe a red/white Cocahoe or a Gulp shrimp on a jighead. Should I do this or just use live shrimp/finger mullet under a popping cork instead? Artificials have been so iffy for me historically unless the water is perfectly green.
2) Is there a good pier around there? I only know of that one in Port Isabel and have never tried it.
3) Any bait shop recommendations?
4) Im planning on buying a bubble bucket to keep some live bait in. If I put some shrimp/etc in there the night before, do you think it will stay alive until the morning?
5) I have no boat, no kayak, just my own two feet. Any good places to fish on the bay side of things? Access points? I do have a bone stock 4WD truck, but would prefer someplace not too too gnarly to get to since I might possibly be bringing along a few kids and it would not be fun to get stuck.

Thanks for your help and God Bless!

Good questions, i havent fished SPI since my coconut telegraph days - and i cant help with 2- 5 - but on one , several very experience guys have suggested i switch from gold spoon in the surf to silver in the surf. The nut shell of what they said was "use gold in the laguna madre, use silver in the surf." Good luck and enjoy your days on the sand.

Throw some small Gotcha plugs in the surf in addition to the spoons.

You did not say exactly where you are staying, but the jetties are better than any pier around and is an easy walk. It's also a state park and usually not crowded. That's where I would suggest using live bait rather than the surf. Just take the causeway onto the island and turn right, you'll drive right into it.

I've never fished in the bays there so I cannot help you on that. I know there are some headboats working out of Port Isabel.

Correction, Isla Blanca Park on the island is a county park.

I second the jetty fishing. There is a bait stand near the parking area. Depending on your strength and endurance, you may want to travel light as it is a long walk to get to the actual beach. You can fish right next to the parking area if you cannot handle the hike. Good luck

Thank you! I don't have the address on hand right now, but if I remember correctly it's just a couple miles from the Schlitterbahn down there.

We are talking hundreds of yards from the water park to the county park gates. Look it up on Google Maps.
