The turtle you guys are talking about are juvenile Green turtles and they are endangered species. The dinner plate size is about 4 to 6 years old. Most are born in the Bay of Campeche and follow the sargassum seaweed to here. They stay here while they are juveniles and then head back to the Bay of Campeche were they can grow to 600 pounds. The Kemps Ridley is the most endangered sea turtle in the world. They lay there eggs during the day were a green lays there eggs at night. Why are there so many? All the hard work that goes on at the ARK and the National Park looks like it is paying off big time.

The green sea turtles are pretty cool. My wife and I camped down pins last weekend and saw them. They will come up right next to you and check you out. I only saw one at a time so I figured it was just the same turtle over and over again. I want to say late spring and early summer is when I see them the most. At the jetties at port Mansfield you can see a few at once eating the green algae off the rocks. We are not turtle nerds but do enjoy having them around.

I was out Friday before last trying my new body board on the north side of the Packery jetties, saw them cruising in just about every swell in the first gut. Quite a sight. None of them looked injured or stressed, so I just enjoyed watching them and made sure I didn't hit any. Water clarity was much better that day though than it is this weekend. I could see bottom in the second gut!
