Man, I am so glad that I didn't bid on the work after all. I figured the flooding/water to the dunes/isolation from any and all material would be the main issues with this construction process and really jack the price up but a government shut down never occurred to me.

Jeff, do you know who is doing the work?

word around the campfire during selection was the Mako was one of the top choices, but I'm not sure now...

Good news at last.

Does anybody know plans and specifications? I would like to think they are going to fix the road with a more "permanent" type solution that is a little more, shall we say, "idiot proof".

Here is all that I have seen. Now, it may have changed after the contractor was selected and hopefully they got detailed in their requests because this is pretty damn bare:

Brief background
"...Due to long standing flood waters resulting in ground saturation, Yarborough Pass Road lost its structural integrity and became severely rutted from vehicular traffic. The park is now seeking to have the road reconditioned by pulling displaced material from adjacent road shoulders area back to centerline. In addition, rutted or damaged areas within the road prism will need to be filled and a suitable road crown established as to shed water from the finished road surface. The road surface will need to be properly compacted as to sustain vehicular traffic once completed.

It is anticipated that the on site reclaimed road shoulder materials may be insufficient in quantity to complete the road reconditioning work being requested. The contractor will be responsible for providing accurate calculations on quantities of suitable road building materials as to minimize cost overruns. Any material cost overruns in excess of 10% or more shall be the responsibility of the contractor.

- Mobilization of resources to site.
- Reconditioning of road surface per contract.
- Site clean up to satisfaction of contract.
- Demobilization. "

That is about it. Two whole pages of text, no plans, no survey, no data, no material recommendations. I had suggested to rip the whole road out and install geogrid before importing crushed concrete or limestone but since I couldn't get clarification as to whether this would be allowed I didn't pursue this bid. They will probably go with more caliche which would just deteriorate and erode with every rain and vehicle passing through.

Yeah, that sounds like just a freshen up with existing materials, and go get some more materials if that is not enough...which it won't be. I have a hard time believing any contractor would even want to waste their time with reclaiming material on the side, as from what I have seen, it has become adulterated with the stinky mud etc.

Hopefully the new stuff they inevitably bring in will have some larger aggregate in it.

I wrote a lengthy post on how to fix this thing on the cheap and have users of the road self repair from a stockpile of very large aggregate that remains on site. But I guess liability etc. might limit that option.

I just finished doing a road at a ranch in Bastrop, and that thing site on a bed of the nastiest clay I have ever seen. We were able to stabilize it with large rock and 6" to 12" of city base on top. Also, that Bastrop site got incredible amounts of runoff that we were able to route along side and ultimately under the road with some nice applications of culvert pipe.

With Yarborough, like any road, the key is maintenance. Once it starts to go downhill, if you do nothing, it will be unusable. The good thing about Yarborough is that there are low expectations and it could be easily maintained.

Has anybody here in their trips down island seen anything going on with Yarborough since they "restarted" construction?

Heavy machinery, dump trucks filled with aggregate, general construction traffic, guys eating lunch?

Throw me a freaking bone here.

I had a buddy of mine go down to PINS yesterday. He was told Yarborough was open by the park staff. Was unable to confirm in person as water was to the dunes. Strange considering north winds. Perhaps it was the remnants from the strong south winds prior. What say the Corpusfishing.com super sleuths?
