Added to the current discussion about the awful state of the Packery Jetties, and even made a point of going out to walk the 'Dunes/Handicap Ramp Section to the Turning Basin/Launch' area of the South Jetty on Saturday.

It's as bad as you could imagine. The concrete walkway has completely collapsed in a number of spots. The interlocking 'jigsaw puzzle' pieces have been lost to Davey Jones' locker all along the jetties. Yep, it's a total replacement and the $21 MILLION DOLLAR pricetag says it all (say that in your best Austin Powers voice). Cool

But I did jump into the Way Back Machine, and uncovered this photo of the very same area, but this is dated Sep, 2006!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's Quality Workmanship Right There Folks!

Yep. That thing has been falling apart since they built it. Any time storms move a lot of water the sand washes out and the interlocking mat sinks. So far the fix has always been to just dump rocks on top of the sections that sink. Not sure who thought sand would stay where they put it.

The Australians have a product that is an upgrade to that mat idea.
It is a hollow blanket that they pump full of concrete and it becomes an immovable mass without all the holes for sand to be lost.
A layer of erosion fabric below those blocks would have helped, too.
