"Man DOGGONE what's that rank behind smell!!!" I yelled over to the passenger seat of the truck, as Billy rubbed some more of this Icy-Hot looking junk in a little jar all over himself. We were southbound and down, with a 10 gallon Ralph Wade bucket full a' mullet, and the plan was to show the reds and trout a few new ways to jump in our coolers. "WHAT SMELL! COE-LINN YOU ARE ALWAYS SMELLING SOMETHING! Maybe you are smelling YOUR OWN upper lip this time!" And it was raining again that October morning, and our windows were up as it poured down on us, and the smell was overwhelmingly putrid, and that's when I saw a lone Lesser-Black backed gull, and knew there was no time like the present to ask the question dogging me for years. "HEY! Why that gull sitting there like that?" I asked. "Because, Coe-Linn, that's where it chooses to sit." Thoroughly unsatisfied with my answer, the next bird I saw, I tried again. "Hey! Why that heron standing right there? Why not over there??" Or over there?! Or on the dune!?" My answer was quick. "COE-LINN I DO NOT KNOW! HOW WOULD I KNOW!!" We hit a bump and fell into silence. "Okay!" I hollered. "This bird HERE! Why him and the others choose to hang out right in THAT particular spot of beach! There's just GOTTA be a reason! And YOU are the ONLY human being that could POSSIBLY know!!!" With the rage of a ticked off parent, "COE-LINN BECAUSE EVERYTHING HAS TO BE SOMEWHERE EVEN THESE BIRDS!!!! THEY'VE GOTTA BE SOMEWHERE DON'T THEY?? EVERY SINGLE LIVING CREATURE ON EARTH HAS GOT TO BE SOMEWHERE!! AND THAT RIGHT THERE HAPPENS TO BE THEIR SOMEWHERE THIS MORNING NOW DOESN'T IT!!!" And before I could utter something about that being the crappiest bird training I'd ever heard, the truck hit a bump, the icy hot container of nastiness flew into the back seat, and there was yelling and hollering about passing up the trout hole while worrying about where birds choose to stand.

--2016, A trip down the Seashore with Capt. Billy, guide for 22 years there. Rest in Peace Billy.

Howdy everyone. Slipped in a trip last Sunday for birding with Sue Wolfe, the PAIS 2018 Artist in Residence. Her website is http://www.where-2-next.com and her Instagram is instagram.com/suewolfe943. She is photographing the Seashore for the year of 2018 through every month of the year.

Really wished I'd brought my camera back to an early morning ephemeral pond and dune field, but we'll have to wait to see her pics as I did not.

Ruddy Turnstone, breeds in the Artic Circle! Winters on 6 southern continent's coastlines!

Herring gull!

Royal and Caspian terns abounding.

And some rain.

And several very cool groups of Long Billed Curlews!

And a few cattle egrets here and there.

Do you see the black bellied plover?

Sorry so brief, just snapped a few quick photos, but Sue has got hundreds. Can't wait to see them as she releases them. Some will be on a display at the Visitor's Center eventually she has told me. And she will be compiling more into a book of Padre Island. Take care everyone.

it was a great weekend for photography with the narrow wall clouds and otherwise bright sun.
Thanks for sharing

Been there done that with a question about Pelicans. You still ask hoping he'd have some sage profound answer. I asked him why all the pelicans were in a certain spot. "Everybody's got to be somewhere and that's where they are.." I expected him to say to say "see those terns feeding off in the distance offshore? Well these pelicans are fixing to go out there to join them when they finish resting right here" In his defense he did say stuff like the latter at times! Smile

All those Birds , just another of so many beauty's & wonders to behold on the island . I will never forget the day I was about 30 miles down taking a mid days rest stretched out in back of old suburban with tail gate down and I herd a flutter and slight tap . Looked over my shoulder to see a Hummingbird sitting on tailgate jut about 20" from me , just gasping for breath with his chest heaving . I was awed with the beauty and respect for the endurance and challenge this petite critter set for himself. Headed south- far south, with in just minutes he was on his way again . -----
