Interesting, but I do not ever buy the "leader" line, I always just buy the flouro line of whatever weight I deem necessary, and have never had a break off. However, I should say I never catch anything over 8 oz.! |

Coincendentally, I have been using Vanish for my leaders for many years now. The only exception would be my trips to the salt, as Vanish is only available up to low/moderate lb tests.
Also, this same outfit has a video doing the same test with Seaguar Leader line and Seaguar Main line. The leader stuff is 5 X the price of the main line, but the test showed that the cheaper Main line was slighlty better in abrasion resistance!😳 _________________ Dave

| Just watched the video along with a follow-up he did on knot strength. The vanish lost all knot strength test. I've been using vanish for years as my leader on my inshore rods |

| I have been using 25lb vanish for years without issue. It's one of the few brands that has 25, with 20 I have had some breakoffs and 30 is a little stiff for knot-tying IMO. |

Joined their FB group. Question for then is to test line strength. I buddy of mine from up north has a buddy of his that owns a small company that makes fishing line. I also remember test are done to test the line strength and compare dia vs strength, etc. Wonder if the weather being slightly thicker has over all greater line strength them the vanish. _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

I use 20lb mono for leaders.
I tried Vanish and the knot strength was terrible.
If they did not fail when I tied them, they still might fail fighting a fish.
And forget loop knots. They almost always fail.
I only tried Vanish.
I do not plan to try flouro again.
Mono works.

I spent a heck of a lot of time playing around with flouro leaders. I finally decided that I could not tell any difference and mono was cheaper and easier to find. A spool of clear Ande lasts me for years of leader making and runs something like 6 bucks.
Now wire, I'm still playing around with titanium and I like it for smaller stuff like throwing jigs for Spanish mackerel. The jury is still out on that over plain wire though. |

I use both regular (Nylon) mono and Fluoro. They are both "mono" because they are single filament lines. That said for clarity; if I'm fishing in fairly murky water, it's nylon. Cheaper and less critical on tying a perfect knot. FLuoro always proves weaker (in scientific tests) in knot strength for a given diameter.
If I'm fishing in relatively clear water, and especally for more spooky species, it's fluoro for me. In my fishing experience, I get more hits/hookups this way. I use reels with VERY smooth drags and that combined with good fishing skills has done me right, with either line. The only time I (rarely) break off is if I set the hook using lighter line in clear water while attempting to drive the hook thru a lizard and into a bass's lip, and this is my fault, and happens about twice a season from me not having my drag optimized.
For me, I would much rather get more hits and catch more fish, while possibly having to be more careful, than the opposite. _________________ Dave

| Fish teeth are not made of Aluminum Oxide. I agree that we don't have to use fluoro all the time, but I do find it's still tougher when I need it to be. There is also a difference in refraction making it slightly better in clear water. there is also a big difference in each lines composition whether its a copolymer or pure 100% fluorocarbon. I'll use it around oysters, I also find that a fluoro leader will last longer without retying compared to mono. With mono you better check it every fish. I do still use mono when I feel it's not going to be getting the abrasion such as on the grass flats or open water. |
