I hope I dont make this confessing but I am looking at the weight location and line tension in leader setups and sometimes it doesnt make much sense.
Examples

Typical carolina red rig (names may vary) is as I understand it hook on bottom swivel on top and sliding egg sinker sliding between.

Larger fish and surf rigs may have weight on bottom but many show sliding weight, whether pyramid or spider, either sliding on the leader much like a carolina or actually on a snap swivel with beads above the leader swivel.

The question I have is this
. When we have a sliding weight of these types why is it that the general rule of thumb especially in surf fishing is set the weight and crank up the tension to where the rod bends.?

Doesnt this defeat the whole purpose of having a sliding weight?

Shouldnt it be set the weight and then let off the tension so that the leader or line can free slide for whatever distance is desired?

My experience has been if you don't set the spider weight into the sand and keep tension by tightening the line the current will take it.

Agreed gunner. But after setting the spider weight or pyramid surf weight why do we keep TIGHT tension on the line when we set them on sliding weights?

I dont have my weight in a sliding configuration. It is the bottom point of my rig that ideally stays put all the time. The only thing that moves for me is the drop to the hook which is on a 3 way crane swivel. Tight lines are so I can feel or see the bite.

same set up as gkrane, with tension on the line, its very exciting to see the line go slack - hopefully means a big red fish has picked up the weight with the hook and bait in his mouth and is trying to leave the country ! as you can tell we don't get to fish very often, but that is why we put tension on the line.

Maybe the way I wrote it was still confusing.
I know why we keep tight lines.
I guess the question is why do we set things up with sliding weights when we keep a tight line so that with the exception of a really large fish nothing is going to slide anywhere because of the line tension.

When the fish pick up the bait that way they're not pulling directly on the weight but pulling on the line attached to the pole. Once they get it far enough away than the weight will come undone. The tension from the bait to the pole is not as hard as the tension directly to the weight

I agree with Zia. Also think when the fish picks up the bait and pulls the surf weight free, the tension on the rod will set the hook.
