I have lived here in Texas for 6 years now. I am out next to Old San Patricio. Wednesday morning while packing up for camping we noticed a bunch of butterflies around the wet spots in our driveway. Today there has been a massive amount of them cruising over our house. Probably a thousand or so per minute and been going on for hours. Pretty cool to watch. Small orange and brown. Googled south Texas butterfly migration and didnt find what I wanted. Anybody know what they are called?

Hog nosed butterfly. Usually the migration is in early fall. For whatever reason there seems to be a correlation between large fall migrations and red tide.

Seems as though there was an infraction committed here of an unwritten rule of mentioning that which shall not be mentioned. So what should it be - double secret probation? Considering who broke the rule - well, is it simply left to his sole discretion? I think not! Someone has to stand up for maintaining the rules - written or not. After all, without rules there is chaos.

This though comes to me after reading about unwritten rules in baseball. For instance, if you steal second when your team is up by a large margin just maybe you can expect to be hit by a pitch your next time at bat. Rules are rules.

But about butterflies, it is a terrible thing to drive though a 100 miles of screaming butterflies (is that from a Doors song?). I do remember reading about an event where a particular kind of predator wasp population was down because of a virus or something and the number of butterflies exploded.

Agreed. A cheap steal with a big lead = 'chin-music'!!! Just like flipping your bat and admiring a majestic homer. You're get the next heater in the ribs!! Shocked

Don't know about the predator-prey relationship, but my understanding is the butterflies really like spiny hackberry trees, and after big rains, they can hatch out and strip whole areas of food. The 'migrations' are them searching out more food options. That, and the eggs laid are pretty drought resistant, and are triggered by big Spring rains. That combination means we see them pretty much the same time every year in Mid/South Texas.

Despite what your windshield and grill looks like afterwards, 'we' don't make much of a dent in these huge hatching events.

My personal vote is for Super Secret Double Probation, for said infraction!
