At first I thought it was a red, then it took off down the rocks and thought it was a jack. After several 100+ foot runs, I was able to see the body and I thought it was some sort of shark. It wasn't until it was 20 feet away and a 15 minute battle that I realized it was a beautiful cobia. It was a challenge landing him by myself. I gave him a kiss on the forehead and he slapped his tail away he went back into the gulf. When I ran for the camera, a fishing neighbor measured him at 52 inches. I didn't see the measurement. He sure felt heavy. Must have weighed over 50 pounds. Thank you to the fisherman for taking the photos.

| I love cobias. They fight hard, make you pay for mistakes and if you take them home they're great on a dinner plate. |

Great catch!!!!
Very currious as to why it didn't go home with you. IMHO, one of the best eating fish out there!
Your d--n lucky the conditions were so flat. Landing any nice fish on the jetties in normal coastal bend conditions is fraught with peril. A cobia..... and one of that stature, being brought in to the slippery, barnacle encrusted rocks with 2-3' plus waves? Man oh man!!!! _________________ Dave

Thanks Land Locked Beach Bum,
I practice catch, photo, and release for many reasons. I keep around 5% of what I catch, and they are the small ones or one that have a mortal injury. Just a quick list of the reasons
preserve the brooding stock of big fish
want to catch the same fish again
usually fishing with kids, set an example for them
bio-accumulation of mercury from fish to humans
You are right on the conditions. It was a golden weather window and I did get really lucky to land him. I bet he gets away 90% - 95% of the time. _________________ You do stupid things, you get stupid prizes. |

And thanks to you, he/she is still out there - hopefully having lots of babies. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

I'm gonna go with Landlocked on this one. There is way too much table-fare on that one to let go!!
As far as your reason, they are noble for sure, BUT:
preserve the brooding stock of big fish - This species is notorious for its rapid growth, and it's neither Overfished nor undergoing Overfishing - No worries there.
want to catch the same fish again - Highly unlikely, especially from the jetties - especially given the conditions (you ought to have run out and bought a Lottery ticket, because you were blessed that day!)
usually fishing with kids, set an example for them - Excellent example to set. A tip of the cap to you.
bio-accumulation of mercury from fish to humans - Again, given the biology of this species, that is a much lower concern than seen with many other long lived, top predators.
[But, I'll bet if you had served a few lemonfish steaks to those kids, they would have seen the light on the 'Best Tasting Fish in the Sea"!! , and would practice conservation and still enjoy this fish. I will trade anything out there for a lemonfish, especially one that size!!!]
Congrats on the CPR of a beast! |
